Yes the PSN, which was wobbly this afternoon, has now thrown a full wonk and gone completely offline, just in time for everyone getting home and updating to firmware 2.0.
As ever, Sony are working hard on the blah blah blah, oh god do I really need to type all this again? We should make a template for PSN down pages to save time as it happens so regularly. You know the drill, it’s broken, everyone will complain and say Sony are crap and it will be fixed at some point, probably late tonight just when you want to go to bed.
In the meantime I suggest you go do something else. E4 is about to start an hour long session of The Big Bang Theory, that’s my choice for the evening or if you have Sky the premiere of The Flash is about to start. You could tune in to Channel 5 and discover Why Planes Crash (I’m guessing having no wings may be one possible answer) or Watch has episode five of The Dog Hotel. Woof, and indeed, woof.
UPDATE: No news from Sony but my PSN seems to be working, at least bits of it are. Others are reporting things slowly getting back to normal.
UPDATE 2: Sony have deleted the status message so I presume everything is working again.

If they hadn’t tied online gaming to PS+, we could still be playing games online, surely?
Oh well, at least you can play offline games. Or use Netflix and the like. At least you don’t need to ask Sony for permission to access the Netflix servers.
And it looks like you can view trophies on the PS4 while it’s offline without it getting all upset now. Don’t like what they’ve done to the trophy notification with the 2.0 update though. Looks weird, but you can press the PS button to view the trophy when it pops. Which is kind of nice. Once. (It just takes you to your trophy list, possibly answering the “WTF did I do to earn that??” questions)

Pretty sure you need to be signed into PSN for Netflix, at least on PS3 you do. Cant understand why though.

No, you don’t. It seems to prefer it if you are, for some unknown reason, but once it’s thrown up an error, it works fine.

Sadly this is becoming a regular occurrence.
We all knew the PSN was pretty shit on PS3, but it was free so I cou put up with it.
Now it’s a paid for service, it’s fair game to compare it with the vastly superior Xbox live service.
Sony need to get this sorted, fast.

I don’t think this will change anytime soon. I am no IT expert but if I start to think about it: Sony is losing money (as a whole company), which I guess means the infrastructure will not see any big improvements in the future.

The way a successful company who is on the slide gets out of the slump is to invest. Losing customers due to a poor product will not help them one bit. Improving the product which has vast earning potential (and now has a direct cost to profit link) is the best course of action.

Yeah, that was my thought as well – Even if the company as a whole isn’t doing as well as they should or would like (smartphones & TV’s flailing mainly I think), if they have an area which is profitable (which gaming certainly could or should be), they should concentrate on keeping that customer base.
They came out swinging in this generation of consoles, but they need to look into general reliability issues etc if they want to finish strong too.

This was fine when it was a free service.
Now that it’s paid it’s simply not acceptable.
Yes, Live isn’t bulletproof but it’s nowhere near as unstable as PSN is, and considering the price similarities Sony simply have to sort their shit out if they want to avoid alienating some users of the service.
Personally this doesn’t Impact me as:
– I’m so busy lately I rarely get the chance to play
– I notlonger play online as I refuse to pay for online play (on principle). Free online was part of the reason I initially when with PS3
However despite this not impacting me directly, I still think there is an unacceptable level of unreliability for a paid service, especially compared to their peers.
What is it with Sony and online?
