There’s A New Battle Brewing As Ubisoft Move From Steam To Origin

Yesterday we reported that Ubisoft had declined to list Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Unity and The Crew on Steam and now we know why, the titles have appeared on EA’s rival distribution service, Origin.

Along with the new games a whole host of older titles have also appeared on Origin, although they are also still available on Steam. These include Watch Dogs, Rayman Splinter Cell Blacklist, and earlier Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed games along with season passes and DLC.

The games are priced at their full RRP so Far Cry 4 is a hefty £49.99. Will we see other publishers move to Origin to break Steam’s huge influence in digital distribution? Only time will tell.

  1. Considering my own personal feelings on Origin. Its safe to say that any ubi games i buy will be on console going forward.
I just can’t get over how rubbish origin is from my own personal perspective.

    • Yeah, me too. Mine are a little personal too, since a friend of mine used to work for origin, the software house, such a shame they used a trademark with a great legacy for such nefarious purposes.

  2. Well that’s… Weird.

Also, I had no idea Rayman had gone all Sam Fisher – At least that’s what I assume the game “Rayman Splinter Cell Blacklist” is? ;)

  3. Ubisofts games have been on origin for a long time. I bought watch dogs and trials fusion from there when they first came out. This has nothing to do with ubi removing them from steam..

    • Ah, didn’t know that – Weren’t they (at one stage) supposed to be making Uplay a rival to these two though??

      • In not sure what ubi are trying to do with it, but it’s a poor imitation of origin, let alone steam.. The big problem with ubi games on PC is that you still have to login to uplay even if you buy from origin, which means that in order to play your game, both origin and uplay have to be running. Also, every time I try to play a game on there, uplay seems to need an update which takes ages. Very annoying and the main reason I only buy ubi games on ps4 now.

  4. Forget about the switch from shop to shop, take a look at the price of Far Cry, £65! Sixty five pounds!

    • Clearly that’s a special offer as well for the gold edition

  5. in a new twist, possibly, Gameinformer are reporting the games are back on the Steam store.

though having just checked, they’re not on the UK store.

though Lego the Hobbit is there for just under 4 quid.

actually most of the TT lego games are on sale this weekend.

    anyway, excuse the aside.

what is going on with Ubisoft?
they seem to be flip flopping more than ms did after the last e3.
first the resolution thing, now this.

if i do get any of these games, it’ll be on console.

  6. Whether a game is on Steam plays a big role in my purchasing decision. If it’s DRM free (like from Humble or GOG) that’s fine but it has to be something special or really cheap for me to consider Origin or Uplay.
I probably shouldn’t admit this but I’ve rebought games I already owned just so they’re in my Steam collection! (In my defence it was in a Steam sale.)

  7. How do they hope to sell games at the prices shown in the picture up top? Watch_Dogs at £45 is a bit steep when it’s available from Amazon and other retailers at just £17. I know it’s been asked before, but how do they justify that price for a digital download compared to buying it on disk for almost a third of the price? Bonkers.

    • They pretty much rely on those that are too lazy to go out & find a cheaper version, or look elsewhere on the net, same as the PS Store.

The advantage that the PS Store has with that though is that there aren’t other outlets that are simply a click away.

The strangest thing about this whole thing for me though is that these people actually exist in the first place. Bargain is king to me.
