Sony Celebrate Two Decades Of PlayStation Gaming With 20th Anniversary Montage

We’re a little under a month away from the 20th anniversary of the original PlayStation console launch in Japan, which occurred on December 4th, 1994. Sony are celebrating this with a mashup video of games from every PlayStation platform, and even a couple from well before the PlayStation brand existed.

I can’t help but wonder if they knew back then just what they could do with the brand and how many fans they would grow to amass. Despite their problems over the years with their network and console firmware, you rarely find fans of a particular platform as enthusiastic and dedicated as PlayStation fans, largely because Sony continue to deliver products that tug at our emotions in all the right ways. They don’t get everything right but I think we can agree it’s been pretty great ride so far.

  1. Some good memories whizzed passed my eyes there.

    Lovely

  2. Fab video. I wonder how many hours/days/weeks of actual playing time I have had across all four PlayStations? Rather a lot I’d wager!

  3. Man I’m old, 20 years ago, it feels like yesterday when I first opened my PS1

    • Same mate. I remember selling my Sega Saturn (I think) and picking up my PS1 with the original GTA, Gran Turismo and FF7. Not bad games to start with!

  4. It’s been a heck of a ride, great times with some notable and definitive moments along the way, Sony should be applauded for the achievement so here’s to the next twenty by which time my controller will likely be a zimmer frame with light bar! :P

  5. Is there anything that isn’t 20 years old this year? Rinse FM, Pulp Fiction, Chocolate Skateboards, Friends, Playstation, etc!!

    • People that turn 19? ;)

      • Forest Gump, Lion King, Parklife, Definitely Maybe, the deaths of Kurt Cobain & John Candy, the list goes on!

  6. Ahhhh those were great times, trying to remember my first Playstation Game…. think it was Crash Bandicoot. PS2 was Max Payne. PS3 was Resistance I think and PS4 was Killzone Shadow Fall. So many great games on PS1 all the way to PS4.
Here is to another 20 more years SONY, I will be gaming at 48 years old xD

    • You’ve got a good memory! I’m gonna try this now, PS1 I’m pretty sure was Gran Turismo 2, PS2 was SSX3, PS3 was definitely F1 Championship Edition (argh, my bleeding eyes!), PSP was Mercury, Vita was Wipeout 2048, then finally I bought Killzone first on the PS4 but played MGS Ground Zeroes before that, so does that count as my first?

Nice video! I like the thumbnail picture, I remember a friend (spoilt, had everything) had one of those little VMU memory card mini-game jobbies, lack of support made it totally pointless but it was still a wonderfully wantable gadget.

      • I do have great memory on gaming but everything else that is not game related is a blur xD
As for the PSP it was Killzone Liberation, PSP Go no clue (what is wrong with me!?!) Although it was Uncharted Comics. And the Vita I believe was Uncharted Golden Abyss.

  7. Lovely video although that might be some of the worst music I’ve ever heard in my life. Dear God!

    • Yeah, I totally agree, and I absolutely wasn’t going to ask if anyone knew who it was by, nope. (goes back to listening to Paramore)

      • Whilst Paramore (which I’ve just checked on YouTube for the first time) might not be for me, that’s utterly harmless and makes perfect sense that someone will enjoy that.

The music in the video above, however, is like a cacophony of wailing banshees who also happen to be terrible parents and are at a restaurant dedicated to the screaming, miserable, vomitous masses they’ve squeezed out of their laughing gaps two years prior to said meal out.
