Sunset Overdrive Free For 24 Hours With Xbox Live Gold This Weekend

Microsoft really know how to pull off a birthday celebration. While Sony are staying relatively quiet on the topic of the PS4’s birthday, Microsoft are offering freebies and gifts to Xbox One owners.

Now, exclusively for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, they’re offering 24 hours of access to Sunset Overdrive. From 12:01 AM Eastern Time (that’s 5:01 AM UK time, so set your alarm clocks) you’ll be able to play the game for free. It’s the full game too, so you’ll collect achievements and progress will even carry over if you decide to buy the game.

If you get far enough in the game, then you’ll even be able to play the excellent 8-player co-operative Chaos Squad mode. Bear in mind, you’ll have to download the game too so your playtime may be cut short depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Let’s hope Sony follow suit – we’re almost a week past the US anniversary of the PS4 launch, and just over a week away from the first birthday of the UK launch. Perhaps even Driveclub’s PlayStation Plus edition?

  1. Wow that’s awesome. Sadly it would take well over 24 hours to download the game on my connection so I won’t be able to make use of this. Oh well.

    • Never thought about that. I guess one advantage Sony may have is if they wanted to do a similar thing they could do it through the PS Now maybe.

    • Maybe worth checking if there is an option for a preinstall. looking forward to having a go at this plus its a good excuse to get the xbone on the big telly as ill need to hard wire to get it downloaded that little bit faster.

  2. Good idea, though 48 hrs would be better or maybe 24 hrs from activation like a film rental.

One of the best games of the year.

  3. I’ll see if I can get it to download in time for midnight. Even with my superfast BB it probably won’t as downloading on xbone seems to take forever.

Having just turned my xbone on I’ve had to do an update. I remember the last 2 times it did that anybody else being this? I’ve also got it in auto-update. Which is also weird.

  4. Wouldn’t it of been better to allow people to download it for the first 24 hours today but have it ‘locked’ then ‘unlock’ it for play at the same time as above. That way people had 24 hours for it to download and install. I bet most people won’t get much time to play it once they have downloaded it.

Suppose it is a nice thing to do for its first birthday though. Balls in your court Sony…
