Sony Online Entertainment Sold To Columbus Nova, Renamed Daybreak Game Company

Here’s some unexpected news as Sony has confirmed the sale of Sony Online Entertainment to Columbus Nova, with the studio now going by the name of Daybreak Game Company. SOE is currently developing open world zombie survival title H1Z1, and is also known for the Planetside series and DC Universe Online.

Today, we are pleased to announce that we have been acquired by Columbus Nova, an investment management firm well known for its success with its existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company. Yes, that means PlayStation and Xbox, mobile and more!

According to a post on Sony’s forums all properties in development at the studio will continue as planned, which means we’ll still see PlanetSide 2 on PS4. Maybe there will be some kind of exclusivity deal there for a bit, with an Xbox One version releasing later. As Daybreak moves forward H1Z1 is another property that may release across both PS4 and Xbox One, as well as PC. DC Universe could make the multi console jump too, but Daybreak may find the game a bit too old to bother with doing so.

  1. Considering how lucrative the F2P market is right now, Sony must be in some serious financial difficulty if they’ve sold of SOE, surely?

    • God no…SOE was working at a loss, I believe. They lost millions last year and it was one of the things that Kaz wanted to get rid of.

*goes to read some more about it all*

      • Really? I knew SOE’s F2P games weren’t huge compared to the behemoths of League, Dota, Team Fortress etc, but I assumed they at least turned a profit.

Planetside 2 is pretty big, and so is Everquest (those are the only two I can name off the top of my head), so I kinda thought they just weren’t making Sony as much money as they should of considering their player bases.

I thought it was virtually impossible to make a loss in the F2P market!

    • Yes, SOE did when they had subscription mmos, but they started changing everything to f2p, because ‘it’s the thing to do’ and revenue kind of dropped.

  2. *Slow clap*

Well done, Sony. Keep giving away exclusives to Xbox.

    • Above all else, Sony needs to be consistently profitable and SOE were not helping.

      • I suppose you’re right, just seems like they keep giving Xbox a win lately.

      • To be honest, Sony has been doing one hell of a job with the hardware sales but we’ve seen them rest on their laurels before. Thankfully, this is just financial stuff. For me, I want Sony to be profitable and then worry about their own 1st party titles. If SOE had been independent they’ve have been long-gone years ago.

    • Planetside & H1N1 isn’t exactly a huge loss from what I’ve seen. MS probably wouldn’t even want them.

  3. I’m quite interested in Planetside & H1N1, hopefully this means they’ll come to xbox.

    • You don’t want to be interested in H1N1, it could get you killed. :O

But, seriously, this could be the best for everyone really. It would also help if they got rid of the quite controversial guy at the head of SOE.

      • Ha ha, yes I’ll go for H1Z1 instead to be on the safe side!

  4. Interesting to note that the Columbus Nova website hasnt been updated since 2006 :P

    • The site you’ll want is this one, fella.

    • It will be updated every week now it’ has connections with Sony :D

      • Forgot to add the ba dum tish.

      • Yeah, but to do so they will have to take the service offline for ‘maintenance’ for 72 hours out of every week! ;)

  5. If this can help Sony survive then why not ? I just hope they don’t pass on a possible success: H1Z1. I wouldn’t play it but as far as I seen people sre playing it. If I am not mixing it up with some other game. The game has become a permanent resident on Kotaku’s Highlight Reel.

  6. i wish them all the best in supporting the X1 so long as they keep supporting the Playstation consoles as well.
