Street Fighter V is set to mark the start of a new cycle of releases for the venerable fighting series, setting the foundations for the next few iterations of the game, and possibly even defining this entire console generation’s Street Fighter games. It all means that it’s time to bring some new twists and tweak’s to the game’s battle systems.
It’s quite subtle, if you ask me, but it seems that the V in the game’s numbering has been transformed into a kind of branding within the game’s mechanics. As was explained on the EU PS Blog, Focus Attacks and Ultra Combos have been replaced with things like V-Triggers and V-Skills.
V-Skills are the character’s unique skills, which will hold much in common with the game’s previous entries and are simply reliant on button presses, while V-Reversals are counterattacks that use up some of the V-Gauge – “one stock”, says the trailer – and V-Triggers are unique abilities that use the entire gauge in one go. That V-Gauge will reset between rounds, to encourage you to make the most of your abilities, rather than horde them for later.
Street Fighter V is coming as a PlayStation 4 exclusive in 2016, with Capcom working in partnership with Sony. Speaking to Gamespot, a Capcom representative poured water on the possibility of an Xbox One release once again, saying, “We are console exclusive for this franchise for this numbered run.” In other words, if it’s got a V in the title, it’s a V-exclusive PlayStation game.

Yep, sounds about as convoluted (& non-descriptive) as I am used to.

I recall reading the V in V-Gauge is meant to stand for variable as it works in different ways for different characters. Saw a few matches earlier and I’m really liking the look of it, really impressive stuff. Just wondering what will release first, this or Tekken 7.

Oh sure, but I’d wager my first born child that if this was Street Fighter 6, it wouldn’t all be so V-branded.

Wouldn’t surprise me if SFVI had VIctory moves.

I would imagine round about now many xbox fans giving capcom a V sign….
