[Update] Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition Is Out Now

Update: The PlayStation Plus Edition of Driveclub is now free to download for subscribers on the PlayStation Store. You can find it here for Europe and here for those in America.

Happy racing!

It looks like the PlayStation Plus Edition of Driveclub going live on the US PlayStation Store yesterday was only a relatively minor false start, as Shuhei Yoshida was written on the PlayStation Blog that the much delayed release of this game is finally happening tomorrow, Thursday 25th June.

However, this is not quite as simple as flipping a switch and letting everyone play the game willy-nilly. No, this is a more gradual roll out, designed to ensure that we don’t see the same kind of problems that faced the game at its original launch in October of last year. While you will be able to download the PS+ version of Driveclub and play races offline, access to the online functionality will steadily expand over time.

How long that process takes, we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s good to finally see this tale of woe coming to an end.

  1. It’s been a very long wait, but definitely worth downloading as it’s a great game.

  2. But they have missed the boat…you can buy the game pretty cheaply now anyway and most people have moved on…those who used to play it online probably don’t as much…

Missed opportunity because of simply lack of understanding and implementation of a huge online driving game.

    • Yes and no, if you ask me. They’ve missed the bigger boat (Jaws!) but a smaller boat will still turn up. It’ll just have less people on it. Either way, they’ve most certainly learnt from all of this as the initial launch was a clusterf**k of epic proportions. :D

ps. I now want a boat.

      • I had a boat once. It sank. I’m fairly sure it wasn’t my fault.

      • That’s not what the police report says

  3. Awesome racing game if you haven’t tried it. Just don’t let the initial release FU colour your judgement. Only depriving yourself of a good deal of fun if you do…

  4. Umm if they are only releasing this as a SP version for now why could they not do that last year?

    • Now they’re confident that there is server capacity and that it can handle the pressure, which means that the gradual scaling of access is just them being cautious.

    • Well I’m guessing if they released a single player version, it would go against Drive’Club’ & the social side of the game I guess, which was pretty much the selling point (Challenges / Online Team Races etc). Therefore it would be more of a demo than a PS Plus Edition.

      • “Well I’m guessing if they released a single player version, it would go against Drive’Club’ & the social side of the game I guess, ”

But thats what they have just done, the plus edition is SP only for the time being?

      • Like Tef says above though, they’re obviously now confident they have the server capacity so the online section can slowly be rolled out to try and avoid anymore cockups.

    • Also, I could be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure the PS Plus version will include the Start Line Tour which gives you a number of different tracks, cars & weather etc from the Season Pass events which have been released between last year & now. It will give people a better insight into what the game has now progressed into.

  5. I bought and got a refund for the original release but am looking forward to giving it another try especially now the weather is active. Hopefully I won’t find it as frustrating an experience.

  6. I’m looking forward to this.

  7. As others have said, hopefully this and LBP3 have taught Sony a lesson. Delaying a game is always preferable to launching it in a broken state.

    • That’s true but I hate it even more when they announce a game and it’s 4 years before we even see it. You can understand the odd gme being delayed every once in a while but lately it feels like every other game is delayed for one reason or another. I’d all announcements to be held back until they are 95% sure they are 12 months from release.

      • It’s a difficult balance, I guess. Delaying both Driveclub and LBP3 last year would have left Sony with nothing to released in the run up to Christmas, which obviously isn’t financially viable. Although I don’t agree with the company’s decision, I can understand why it was made.

  8. Woo, finally! I’ll give it a couple of days to see how it does, and then I’ll finally get a Plus sub!

  9. Knew this would happen soon. Why? Because I actually bought it just the other day.

You are welcome fellow plussers! :)

  10. Ok let’s see if this download is playable
