Kojima Productions’ Logo & Hideo’s Name Removed From MGSV: The Phantom Pain Box Art

In what appears to be a poignant nadir to several months of rumours and speculation, Kojima Production’s logo has been removed from the final box art for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Earlier reports had suggested the studio’s closure, with a long string of comments from staff pointing towards a falling out between Hideo Kojima and Konami’s upper management.

In March, GameSpot revealed that the studio were working as contractors to finish the game, rather than permanent employees. This appeared to be corroborated in the same month as Konami removed both the Kojima Productions logo and ‘A Hideo Kojima Game’ from the promotional material for The Phantom Pain, and retroactively for Ground Zeroes – prompting a backlash from fans. Today’s news is confirmation, however, as both slip from the game’s website and the final box art.

MGSVPP

Just a few days ago, Gematsu reported the Japanese voice actor for Snake, Akio Otsuka’s sincere and moving goodbye to Kojima Productions.

This translates as, “Kojima Productions was forced to disband, but it appears that the work that the team has been putting their utmost effort into is nearly complete. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I expect it will become their greatest masterpiece. I couldn’t help it. I just wanted to say ‘Kept you waiting, huh?’ (Laughs.) But even if this is the end, Metal Gear Solid is immortal!”  (Thanks to Gematsu for the translation)

What this means for the future of the series, and indeed support for the incoming title is unknown, but for all intents and purposes, this time it might really be Kojima’s last Metal Gear.

  1. We still don’t know why they have treated Kojima this way. I reckon he took someone’s sandwich out of the work fridge, took a bite, didn’t like it, then put it back. That’s enough to nark anyone off.

  2. Bloody hell, this is either one massive wind up or a very bitter end to a colossal series. All the drama has added a layer to the hype, much like the very sad way Paul Walker’s death helped me see his last film in a different light. I’ve no doubt it’ll be a good game and the series has been wonderful.

  3. For a long time, I’ve been thinking that this is all marketing hype…. But removing the names from the game, and from previous games does feel a bit like the end… Unless the next mission for Snake is to rescue Hideo and return him to Kojima….

Who holds the rights to Snake ? is it Kojima or Konami? are we going to see something in the future like the Marvel/X-Men films, where your not allowed to say certain words in the franchise ?? Mutant, there I said it….

    • Konami owns everything MGS.

      • Shame, they’ll ruin the franchise without kojima at the helm.

They’ve been talking about focusing on mobile gaming…

  4. Have i missed something here, i thought this happened months ago?

    • No. They rebranded all previous works apart from the Metal Gear Series after deciding to rebrand themselves as one big publisher with divisions instead of studios.

  5. Konami, you are really trying to make sure no-one pays attention to what you do after Metal Gear do you? Get rid of Kojima on the front box and most of the MG/MGS fanbase will take it as a giant dump on him. You’ve already shut down the studio. You’ve already removed his name from other IPs apart from metal gear and now, you’ve gone and done that. What’s next? Patching his names out of the credits? Claiming that Kojima cheated on you with EA and you found him in bed with them?

But on a happier note, i can’t wait to play MGS:TPP as i will fulton the game so hard that i may get a Liquid Snake. ;)

  6. I could see Sony signing Kojima & his team to form a new studio & make them a MGS style game. Too much of a big industry name to all split up.

  7. I’m dying to play this game. Dying! But I’ll have to wait a few weeks longer as Konami are not seeing a penny of mine for their contempt for fans and the series creator.
    I’m buying used.
