In Monster Hunter, weapons are everything. After warming to one in particular it will become your constant ally as you explore the games’ perilous wilds in search of whatever magnificent creatures they harbour.
Over the years Capcom has tweaked its catalogue of weapons conservatively, occasionally updating them with new moves and added combat functionality. Still, if you go back and swing a great-sword in the 2005 original, it will feel pretty much the same as it did in this year’s latest entry to the series.
Hopefully, Monster Hunter X will spice things up a bit. The 3DS spin-off has already been described as an “action-heavy” approach to the existing formula, and one that will allow players to customise their play-style through various stances.
Building up to the game’s release in Japan, Capcom has posted a string of videos showing various weapon types, all of which now sport an expanded moveset. As shown below, these typically include new aerial attacks, as well as unique super-charged blows.
One Handed Sword
Dual Blades
Lance
Gunlance
Great Sword
Long Sword
Hammer
Hunting Horn
Insect Glaive
Slash Axe
Charge Axe
Light Bowgun
Monster Hunter X will launch exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS this November in Japan. Capcom has yet to confirm a solid launch date in other regions.
