Golden Abyss Was Considered For Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection

The Vita exclusive that is Uncharted: Golden Abyss was once considered for Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, but was left out due to not fitting the narrative that the PS3 games had built over that trilogy. Golden Abyss is actually set before Drake’s Fortune, and while a good story it isn’t relevant to the things Nate, Sully, and company go through from looking for El Dorado to the events of Drake’s Deception.

“It was definitely under consideration, because we were trying to see how we could collect all of the Uncharted games. But when we went back and looked at what we were trying to do with the Nathan Drake Collection, we realised that those three games – the trilogy – actually provided a particular narrative arc that led into Uncharted 4.

We wanted to keep that as a holistic collection for that reason, and Golden Abyss kind of lives a little bit outside of that.”

There isn’t long to wait for Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection which will launch exclusively on PS4 October 9th in the UK, and October 7th in North America.

  1. “We were going to do something but didn’t do that thing” – Does this fit in to TC’s “News that isn’t news” section?

  2. Interesting that its absence is supposedly due to not fitting into the series’ narrative, rather than any sort of technical problems. I assumed it wasn’t included because the Vita-specific mechanics would be difficult to translate onto the DualShock 4, or maybe even because it would look noticeably inferior to the other games. If that was the case then I could have understood, but now it feels more like a cop-out if I’m honest.

    • How so? I feel that people forget that the DS4 can act as a vita sort of when it comes to implementing touch. UC:GA would work on PS4 with DS4

  3. I really enjoyed Golden Abyss. It was small fry compared to the PS3 games but that was exactly what I wanted after the action heavy, set piece laden third game. Shame they didnt include it here. It’s not like it would hinder sales of the Vita or anything.

  4. We all know they couldn’t be arsed porting it really. It’s not the Nathan drake collection if it misses out one of the games he was in! Should’ve been named more accurately like “Uncharted: Cheap port edition”

    • Leaving the Vita game out doesn’t make this a cheap port edition at all. Given Digital foundry’s praise for this collection, it’s quite the opposite. It seems to run at a quite steady 60 fps, and they rate it extremely well, technically.
So, we’re back to disagreement, which is no surprise. I already began to worry… ;o)

      • Given the PS4’s power it will easily run at the higher resolution & fps. I’m saying it’s cheap because little else has been done. Redone cutscenes, voice acting, completely redone textures, new levels or content, keeping the multiplayer would’ve made it much more or a better effort.

    • Not really, irrespective of the name we all know it’s a remaster of the PS3 games. If they included it, it would be okay, but no more unusual than putting the card game in. It would be good if they added GA as an add on like ODST for Halo MCC, but I honestly wouldn’t miss it. Great vita game, but it’d be naff on PS4.

    • Lol really silly thing to say. It makes perfect sense to leave it out. UC:GA was its on game, to show the vita capableability. It would be nice to have it on the big screen but it not being included with the collection does not make the collection cheap or pointless.

      • It’s an Uncharted Game. Featuring Nathan Drake. But it’s not in the Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection. Perfect sense. And just upscaling the resolution & fps is THE definition of a cheap port this generation.

      • “And just upscaling the resolution & fps is THE definition of a cheap port this generation.” – Have you even bothered to register what else they’ve done…
Like the updated character models (which I may be wrong, but surely includes extra polygons), or the player mechanics for the 1st and 2nd games, or added motion blur & several other lighting effects which all add up to make it a far better experience, visually & playability wise.

      • Clearly you haven’t played Uncharted to understand all 3 are related & building up to something. You not just going to throw in a game cause it has the same name.

  5. From a narrative perspective, Golden Abyss will really feel out of place with the main 3 games, so it’s completely understandable. The game is better off as a Vita exclusive so just leave it at that.

  6. Not sure if anyone is aware, but the demo is now available to download off the store. Hopefully it should be waiting for me when I finish work.

  7. They’ll just release Golden Abyss as a stand alone “Remaster” at some point I’m sure. More money.
