The latest financial report from Square Enix reveals that they plan to mine their back catalogue and update old games, Final Fantasy VII being one of the first.
We will revitalize some of our strong IPs in ways that meet the needs of the modern gaming market. For example, we will take an IP developed for earlier generations of game consoles and recreate it for the latest consoles, while also proactively developing versions for play on smart devices.
Unlike Konami the company is embracing the “strong” sales of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and is also looking at creating VR titles. They are also actively pursuing new IPs over multiple platforms.
We intend to strengthen our efforts to sow the seeds of new content, and cultivate them constantly, and we will pursue a variety of avenues in order to do so. Our Group possesses many content platforms, including console games, smart device games, arcades, PC games, and comics. All of those platforms are capable of giving rise to new IPs.
The report also indicates that the company will continue to pursue collaborations with Sony and Microsoft to bring exclusive games and content.
We will not rule out any possibility as we explore and execute collaborative initiatives ranging from joint collaborations focusing on a single product to business alliances of a wider scope
It’s good news all round really, HD remakes mixed with new IPs, and strong support for consoles whilst expanding their mobile games presence. The company seems to be in robust health with net income amounting to Â¥9,831 million (an increase of 49.0% from the prior fiscal year)

Square Enix, if you’re going to remaster/remake PS1 and PS2 games, great. If you’re going to port PS3 games, do one.

More “remakes”? I’d prefer more traditional “make them a bit shinier HD remasters”, really. I’ve a horrible feeling the FF7 remake is going to turn out to be something enough people shouted about wanting for years and might just end up regretting.
Does “We will not rule out any possibility” mean “We’ll happily accept a big bag of money from MS to lie about stuff, even if the Tomb Raider deal turns out to be a disaster”?
I’d settle for a proper new FF game. FF15 doesn’t look like it will be that. FF13 and it’s sequels weren’t. (Even if the first 2 were good and unfairly criticised)

Yeah I think we might be getting a “cursed monkeys paw” sort of wish with the FFVII remake. We’ll get the remake we’ve been asking for………..but it’ll be Advent Children weeaboo angst for 60 hours.
I think there’d be a lot of value remaking some of the Final Fantasy’s though. Not up to the standard of the FFVII remake, but with passable graphics(perhaps cel-shaded or flat shaded) and to fix some of the more troublesome mechanics in the older games (like VIII’s tedious Draw system, or IX’s Trance system). They’re not new games but they’re new to a lot of people, heck I just played Dragon Quest for the first time and had a ball!

With added Microtransactions!
I can sadly see the flanderised version of the original FF7 cast being used or worse, they change the story for the worse! I think they did say some parts won’t make it due to age ratings and that is probably the part where Cloud is in drag. Or worse, they shorten the entire game and strip out entire parts that was in the original!

YAY! More HD remakes of games that i most likely already own on the PS3 and have no intention of getting rid but because it’s shiny, i will buy it anyway! YAY! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Sarcasm aside, i hope this means that they will actually remake the game and not just dip it in a can full of HD as some games have not aged well or need a bit more content. Hopefully, True Crime will get revived(if Square still owns the rights to the first two games) and can be improved. Basically, Sleeping Dogs version of the first two games. However, if this means that all we can expect from Square is remaster/remake after remake/remaster, it will be rather crap as there would be no new IPs for a while.

And i overlooked the part about new IPs. *facepalm*

You do know that Activision owns the True Crime IP, right? That’s why Square Enix had to change the name to Sleeping Dogs, when they bought the rights to True Crime: Hong Kong.

More new old games. Wonderful. Though I don’t think sqenix have a huge amount of recent classics they could port, unless they’re going to actually remake some older games.
