Challenge Accepted: Fallout Gump, Episode 1

Welcome to Challenge Accepted, a new video feature and a personal undertaking. It’s a series intended to highlight some more unique ways of playing games, perhaps to the extent that the developers would never have thought of it.

For this series, we’re taking on a more natural fit to these kinds of role play: Fallout 4. It’s a game that, while divisive, I found to be hugely enjoyable. But while everyone is going through the Commonwealth as they would do normally, I present to you what I’m calling Fallout Gump.

This first episode naturally focusses on the set up, but we’ll be heading into the wasteland to explore its veritable box of chocolate-like surprises before you know it. The general idea is to role play as Forrest Gump, warts and all. While you’re not exactly obligated to do this, for this series, I am limiting myself to one life. Should I die in any way, no matter how anti-climatic, the game is over.

Special thanks for the concept goes to my brother: Neil Irwin, for coming up with the build and the gameplay rules, but if you have similar ideas for challenges within games that are fun, unique, and frankly bonkers, feel free to leave a comment and it may be the basis for another series.

Head over to page two for the character build and play rules, and I’ll see you next time.

  1. I feel personally invested in this. ;)

On a more serious note, does that mean that you will be running everywhur?

    • Ignore that – Just saw there was a page two. Bit embarrassing.

So now that I have read that, does that mean that if a companion dies, you will be donating half your caps to their family? :)

      • I toyed with that one when I wrote the rules, but it seemed unfeasible given at the time – weeks pre-release, we didn’t know much about the cast. In fact I think at the point Dave asked me to do this, we knew nothing other than there was Dogmeat.

So I opted to just tie that honorable trait into an overall ‘act with integrity’ rule.

  2. Very much looking to future instalments of this. Run Forrest run!

  3. This can run & run.

  4. On an amusing side note, other character builds that were messed around with (but left incomplete so far) are:

Iron Man/Batman (largely the same build so far but I envisage the ‘rules’ being different)
    Jean-Luc Picard
    Han Solo
    Jay & Silent Bob

    • Han Solo, I’m assuming, would always shoot first?

      • But of course!!!!

(Really hoping this comments section does not become a Han v. Greedo conversation)

      • Han shot first but because Lucas didn’t want a backlash, he did one of the worst photoshop jobs to show Greedo….. da,, no, no. ooo, that was too close. I am not getting dragged into Greedo Han arguments! Besides, we all know that Darth Vader turned into a scorpion first.

Yes, that actually happened in a game. No, i don’t know why that happened.

  5. Looking forward to seeing more Dave – i hope you don’t die too soon! :P

  6. Haha love this idea. Do random but highly entertaining!
I’ve read it twice but not seen any mention of difficulty settings, am I being an idiot?

    Is power armour allowed?

    • Difficulty settings aren’t factored into this challenge. I’m personally playing on the default difficulty, but should you wish to try it on harder ones, then by all means!

Don’t see why Power Armour wouldn’t be allowed.

      • OK cool.

Weirdly, I am loathed to use the power armour in the game at all. I’ve stored it at Sanctuary and that’s it. In hindsight, I could have done with it when I was at a certain quest from the Minutemen. Was struggling with a legendary creature when out of nowhere, a Queen of the same species came at me. Kicked. My. Ass!

2 x fatman, 5 x missle launcher, 1 x bottlecap mine, 6 x fragmentation grenade and a lot of running away. Not to mention, nearly all my reserve of Stimpaks. Power armour may have helped me a bit in that scenario.

      • AG2297 (Adam) is the same. He wants to leave the armour out of it. I can see why but at least it’s an option to use if the radioactive shit really hits the fan. :D
