What We Played #234: Destiny, Disney Infinity & Watching Star Wars

It’s the last What We Played of the year today, as we get ready to take a break for Christmas – though there’s still going to be stuff popping up on the site between now and the start of 2016 – but it’s also the first What We Played after The Force Awakens has released in cinemas. So I also asked the team if and when they had or were going to see the latest Star Wars film.

Dom, being the excitable little child at heart that he is, has already seen the film twice! His one word review says it’s “fantastic”, but he’s been backing that up by playing Disney Infinity 3.0 and its new The Force Awakens expansion pack. He’s also continued with challenges in Just Cause 3, multiplayer in Xenoblace Chronicles X and reviewed Fast Racing Neo.

“Splindiforous” is how Miguel described the Force Awakens, which he watched in a Nyquil fuelled fever. He’s restricted his gaming time to a spot of Sparrow racing in Destiny and some EDF2 on the Vita.

Tuffcub’s also been Sparrow racing, but quickly got bored of it and its lack of weapons and tracks. He’s also not enjoying his time in Fallout 4, and has decided to wait for Star Wars VII to appear on Sky Movies, rather than go to a cinema.

But Aran’s doing it right, even if he’s a few days behind the most rabid of fans (and risking having certain story moments spoiled for him). He’s off to see Star Wars in 3D IMAX on Tuesday. He’ll doubtless continue to kill plenty of time trying to guide Southampton to glory in Football Manager 16, but also played some Rainbow Six Siege to comically bad effect.

Also on the team was Jim, who has spent most of the past week doing but flit between the various PS4 games stored on that new 2TB hard-drive of his. He won’t be seeing Star Wars ’til Monday and is currently blitzing through episodes one to six. His week started off with a brief spell of Star Wars Battlefront as he went about mopping up some of the more miscellaneous trophies available. This meant a lot of scouting for AT-ST tokens so he could stomp 25 rebels, among other silly tasks.

This was followed up by a long haul on The Witcher III. With the difficulty cranked up to “Death March” it’s pretty tough, but he insists the game continues to thrive. Guitar Hero Live also featured regularly, as did DriveClub, and The Elder Scrolls Online.

His attention soon switched over to Rainbow Six Siege. For the first few hours he didn’t even touch any of the online stuff, making sure he bagged every star in the game’s solo “Situations” first. It was long before he finally started to get his hands dirty in the multiplayer side of things, briefly teaming up with fellow TSAers for a solid few rounds.

And I was also part of that group in Rainbow Six Siege, effing and blinding at the incompetence of the 5th man, a matchmade companion who was invariably quite hopelessly useless. I also returned to Dying Light last weekend for a bit of co-operative play, in an attempt to finish it before the major DLC lands towards the start of next year.

My own one word Star Wars review? Nostalgic.

  1. Some more Modern Warfare 2 with Blast71. Been dishing out lots of hot laps on F1 2015, plus more multiplayer on Gears of War.

We also had a ton of fun on this weeks TGMEM. Specifically the recommended Renault Sport Megane has spawned a new type of wheel to wheel racing we’ve not seen before.

Unfortunately I may have to wait a bit to watch the new Star Wars film, but I’m looking forward to it. I might plan an accompanying visit to the shops to buy SW: Battlefront, got to carry that Star Wars feeling as far as possible.

  2. Elder Scrolls Online, which I’m enjoying a surprising amount. And more Driveclub, trying to get all the trophies, which isn’t going to happen while the new tour they released this week is broken.

And now I’ll probably drive myself mad this weekend with The BIT.TRIP. Which is a bit of a bargain for £7.99 for 6 games (and PS4/Vita cross-buy)

    • What part is broken? I’ve had a couple of games on it and haven’t noticed anything. (That’s the amg dlc I presume)

      • All of it. I can’t access the tour at all. It’s telling me I need to purchase it, which then takes me to the store where I can’t purchase it because I already own it. Or it’s free or something.

      • And now I’ve fixed it.

Restore licenses. That does it. Finally.

      • Oh right. I’ve had no problems with mine, which is nice if you’re me ;)

  3. Just Cause 3, Destiny and not caring about Star Wars :)

  4. Back off my hols, so started off with a little bit of Driveclub just to see what the recent updates have brought – more grip in hyper cars by the looks of it.

Then finally, FINALLY, the universe stopped getting in my way and I was able to start Fallout4. Not gotten too far with it though, mostly just exploring the top left corner of the map, collecting every bit of crap going and doing the odd mission.

  5. Got the Plat in AC Syndicate and started playing Just Loading 3. A great game ruined by what feel like 5 minute loading times every time you die or start a new mission. It’s enough to turn one of my most anticipated games from a ‘Buy it’ to a ‘Pinch it, Go to jail for 3 months so Avalanche can patch it and Bargain bin it in the Easter sales’. I can’t remember the last time I played a game where the loading times actually ruin the game. Sucks all the fun out of playing it.

Really looking forward to seeing The Force Awakens on Monday. I was never really a fan of the Star Wars movies. It was only after playing the Force Unleashed games that I watched them again and really got into them. I’m one of the few people who actually likes the prequels despite the obvious flaws and Ewan ‘softly spoken’ McGregor and his annoying face.

  6. The usual Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel.
    Some Nuclear Throne.
    Rayman Legends daily challenges.
Driveclub, for the new AMG tour.
A fair bit of Guitar Hero Live.
    Lots of GTA3.
Fired Terraria up last night to check out the new update (fishing and minecarts), ended up playing it for most of today too.
Will probably do a bit of Minecraft as the new update is out for that too, which also adds quite a lot of new stuff.

    • How did you get the new AMG tour in Driveclub to work? It’s still insisting I need to purchase it :(

      • Sorry mate, only just seen your message (and your other message further up saying you’ve got it working ) .
I just downloaded it from in game when it came out and it worked no problem.

      • Usually, there’s a weird delay between it going up on the store (and showing up in game) and the time you can actually play it. In this case, trying to play it as soon as it appeared seems to have buggered up the licenses, and they never recovered until I forced them.

Which, for anyone who doesn’t know, is under settings -> PSN/account management on the PS4 menu.

Some of the new tour events seem a bit harder than others. Especially driving what has to be the noisiest car in the game. In the rain.

I need to work on those elite levels now. Even that first one is a ridiculous time.

  7. I got the platinum out of The Borderlands Collection sometime last weekend. I’ve also been playing GTA SA and GTA 5.

I saw the new Star Wars. I thought it was very good.

  8. I tried Dragon Fin Soup for an hour but wasn’t impressed at all. Other than that not much. Hopefully the Jan sales will tempt me to buy something new.

  9. My wife has hijacked my PS4 this week. I got the platinum for Peggle 2 a couple of days after it came out, but she has decided to 100% it. She’s obsessed!

  10. I finally finished Catherine on my PS3,as both my L2 buttons on both of my PS4 controllers decided to break within a couple of days. Now I’m waiting for a replacement kit to arrive so I can fix them, hope that works. The game had one of the strangest endings ever, and after my horrible Witcher experience this summer, I start to think it’s me who just gets the oddest endings of all…

And, yesterday 5.30h pm, I saw it. Star Wars VII. It was a religious experience, nothing more, nothing less. Easily the most thrilling, exciting, emotional film of my last 20 years. Having followed this story for about 35 years, this was just incredible. Wow. Am still trying to figure out what it all means for my life, the world, and the galaxy. Just wow. :o))

    • Good is it? ;)

      • You really want me to go on..?
        Ok.
The Millennium Falcon was superbly reintroduced, BB-8 was just brilliant (I want one..!), Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle was extremely beautiful, the end very promising, and… so much more…! ;o)

      • Also I’m with Andrewww here it is great. If you want to overanalyze it there is weaknesses but don’t watch with that view, just enjoy it. I can see Star Wars being really monopolised though. I can’t wait to see the final episode 702 in 67 years :-)

    • I haven’t seen it yet, but with JJ Abrams doing it I never doubted it would be anything but brilliant. Along with Josh Whedon & Christopher Nolan, there isn’t a better film-maker out there.

      • I presume my statement made it very clear I’m not speaking about the film objectively and have no claim to do so. I would’ve written the story slightly differently, for example, and one could definitely find weaknesses, no doubt.
But after so many years following Star Wars, and especially after the huge disappointment of I-III back then, this is the resurrection I was longing for.
