Game Of The Year 2015: Best Fighting Game

2015 was a funny old year for fighting games, namely because there were tons of sequels to existing franchises. It was also a year where Killer Instinct Season 2 improved the core mechanics of an already established title and the various showings of the upcoming Street Fighter V have overshadowed the majority of releases this year.

Ultimately, when it came to the vote, wasn’t even close, with only one real high profile kontender.

GOTY2015-Fighting

Mortal Kombat X, despite some shaky net code at launch and a less than stellar PC port, is the worthy winner of the award. What it all boiled down to was that not only was this game available in the vast majority of territories at launch, but the diverse character list, complete with three variants for each of them, was the most exciting thing to come to a fighting game for years.

NetherRealm Studios also included a lot of content for those just wishing for a single player experience. The Krypt even made unlocking new content a thrilling experience for me, especially thanks to those jump scares, while the various towers and challenges associated with them extend the length of the gameplay to levels that the others can’t even content with. On top of that, the revamped Brutalities are extremely difficult to pull off but incredibly rewarding once you actually nail it!

Even the DLC characters proved to be mostly worthy additions, taking a leaf out of klassic Mortal Kombat characters and classic horror movie villains such as Jason from Friday 13th. With a second DLC pack of characters continuing the trend, the future looks bright for this gory fighter.
