[UPDATE] The PSN Is Back Up

2016, eh? Futuristic innit? I have a new robot vacuum cleaner that does my entire flat and finds his way back to his docking station and does this cute wiggle until he connects up to recharge. I never have to vacuum again, this is the best thing evs!

However, we do seem to have retained some of the problems from 2015, and I’m not talking about the impending arrival of yet another series of ‘Celebrity’ Big Brother. Nope, I’m talking about the PSN being flakey. It’s down again and there is a big exclamation mark to prove it.

As usual we will let you know when things improve, stay tuned for further updates and witty banter in the comments section from TSA regulars. You can also poke this link to keep an eye on the state of the network.

UPDATE: 21:21hrs and it still borked, will check in a bit later to see if things are fixed.

UPDATE 2: This link shows a real time update of cyber attacks, a screenshot of which you can see below. Sony is somewhere under than big green patch of DDoS attacks, looks like some spam monkeys are having some “fun”.

  1. DAMN IT MS!

    • The are indeed under that green dot. Perhaps their undisclosed xbkx one sajes are so bad, they have loads of unused cloud computing resources to put to use…

Perhaps that’s a useless statistic to report next month -number of DDOS agents active. rather than xbkx one console sales, which they have been very shy about..

      http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/10/24/microsoft-no-longer-cares-to-tell-us-how-many-xbox-ones-its-sold/

Even the tomb raider 1m sales are clearly a lie… Shipped numbers across 360 and Xbone… Microsoft spin doctors are getting real desperate. Must have just seen the December numbers.

  2. I mention this earlier in other thread I thought it was strange when I got back on my ps4 later in the day after I read your report about Linux on Ps4.

& I thought to myself heh maybe Sony read your report too & took drastic action or it’s a group of hackers.

    • It was fine until you mentioned it on that other post. Then it went down 10 minutes later. Coincidence? Yeah, probably.

10 minutes later, things were working fine again. Apart from the store.

So I think it’s really “Bits of the PSN may or may not be working for some people”.

      • Ha ha ha It been 2 hours since it been 1st reported.

        http://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/631388/PSN-Down-PS4-offline-Sony-why-is-PSN-down-PlayStation-Network

While Sony while slow to even confirm it me mention it I can’t be blame for the kiss of death.

& still all services are still down for me. But that is expected as some people will get on quicker then others when Sony pull the switch in limited manner as not to blow the fuse out of sticky back duct tape & pins & cups (Network).

      • So a couple of hours with things starting to go down and then come back up again. Some people weren’t affected at first, some things are working quicker for some people than others.

Store’s back up now (on the PS4, the website seems to be struggling)

It’s really not anything bad is it? Vaguely possible it’s a rubbish DDOS attack that failed. Or more likely a network issue they’ve worked around? Or even a cleaner came in after the holidays, took one look at the place, and decided to plug in all the hoovers at once and unplugged the PSN to make space.

  3. FYI if everyone is intreasted you can record your gaming via the share button but of course you need to be online to upload them.

  4. I want to see how angry coward spins this one. Did ms pay sony to take it down? Have ms shills infiltrated the psn team?! Is it really up and ms just paid TSA to say it’s down?!

    • Well, most of it is still working fine. Apart from the store.

So MS are obviously involved and they’re trying to destroy Sony by stopping anyone buying things on a Monday afternoon, which is presumably the busiest period.

Or maybe some bit of the network had a little wobble, which is an inevitable but not that common event.

    • A glitch. You heard it here first.

      • It’s irrelevant, he was planning an offline only gaming session anyway.

      • That’s such a good spin it’s probably true lol.

    • Coming soon to X1!

MSG:Operation Take down Sony! A riveting stealth adventure action FPS where you have to stop the evil Sony from having their network running at any cost!

      Rated PHART and NENENENEENE!

      :P

      • Nurse! They’re doing it again!

        Weirdo.

      • OFF WITH HIS BEARD!

        OFF WITH HIS EYES!

        OFF WITH HIS CONSOLE!

      • Insanity.

    • Now you witness the true power of Microsoft’s cloud. It’s not to make games better, it’s to shut down the PSN!

  5. First Monday of the year, well done Sony *tired clap*

    • You would have to be a [bleep] to fall for the biased reporting. Xvox live outages are rarely reported, PSN outages are ALWAYS reported however brief.

Ever get the feeling you are the one being played?

The first time in about 6 months there is a PSN outage and its reported here within minutes….

      • Because there is a larger userbase of PS4 users and PS users then Xbox Users? Nah.

      • About 4x larger.

PSN is across more consoles (inc handhelds) and jnlile xbox isn’t made up vast swathes of users on their 3rd (or more) console.

      • You do know this is primarily a playstation site? So reporting psn downtime is relevant to its audience. And it’s 5 hours now so it’s fully warranted.

      • I meant on here, not in general. XBL is more stable then PSN and well, Sony’s kinda crap at having reliable networks. PSN is known to go down at random and unlike MS, Sony are not really network providers. They have a lot to learn and have learned a lot but MS are used to networks and were able to provide a reliable service.

      • Well funnily enough all I did to find out was turn on the PS3 and find PSN was down (which is when the tired clap started). The PS3 reporting these types of issues back to me more frequently than the Xbox One is indeed probably biased. Oh wait.

      • Mr Coward, a few points:

        1) We waited a few hours before reporting the PSN was down, purely because 99% of the time by the time we’ve written a post whatever glitch screwed the PSN has been fixed.

        2) Xbox Outages are also reported when something major happens. People seem to complain less when XBL goes down tho, a lot of the noise when then PSN goes down is just from people attacking Sony because, well, there’s twats and that’s how the internet is. That creates a lot more “buzz” when then PSN is down so it appears to be a bigger ‘event’.

  6. I don’t know I still getting the maintenance message every time my Ps4 goes back on & I do not know why some ps4 users can get on while others can’t.

So I’m wondering are we on different servers the major hack some years ago took out the whole Network.

& this could be a simple case of out of service attack. & since the Network hack of years ago we on different servers & the servers I’m on isn’t switch on.

    • Well, the majory hack 5 years ago was Sony bringing the whole thing down just to be safe.

The fact that it’s all up and running again here, but some people might still have issues suggests it’s a network issue somewhere. It could be something like a DDOS attack, unusually high but real traffic somewhere, or even a connection somewhere phyiscally breaking (or losing power or whatever)

Actually, it’s the same pattern we had last christmas with the DDOS attack. That came back up very quickly, but some people had to wait longer, with the store taking the most time. Which makes sense if Sony bring the store down deliberately. You don’t want network problems screwing up a transaction involving money. And probably don’t want to let people buy stuff and add more load to the network downloading things.

  7. I’ve not seen this message for a while! It used to be every week there was a problem, I can’t remember the last time Psn was down.

    • Happy New Year eh? I’m sure Sony are pissed off, I sort of hope it’s a hack that they’re doing quite well at stopping in its tracks, that’d probably be the best news that could come out of this.

  8. Feck sake won’t let me play Mad Max as it requires online. WTF?!?!? Why does the Singleplayer sandbox game requires online?!?!?

    • You expected to play it off line?

WHAT KIND OF SICK MAN ARE YOU!?

Begone, fooul Del! Begone from our sight!

Joking aside, just what the fuck? Also, that is one game that is destined to die at some point due that BS online crap. :(

      • That is ridiculous, surely there is a way to play offline?? Even Need for Speed let’s you do that even though it won’t let you pause!!

Although doespecially anyone know if we keep trophies in this situation? PS3 used to save them then sync but I’ve got one and gone to the list and it still shows as unearned!…

      • Although trophies are now much more aligned with the network (as opposed to PS3 where they were earned, stored & then needed to be synched), anything you earned should still be earned regardless of the network state. It might just be that the picture etc perhaps couldn’t populate as it couldn’t contact the server at that time.

It should be fine. Unless of course it was an online trophy & in which case, there would have been some amazing jiggery-pokery in order to earn that in the first place! ;)

Of course, please do report back if this turns out to not be the case.

  9. Free games!!! Sony still do that, right? Seriously though, hopefully it will be back up for PS+ update tomorrow.

  10. Still down here. My son can’t even play Disney Infinity 3 – what’s that all about? :)

    • A trick I learned from last xmas was to unplug the lan cable for my ps4 this way disney infinity will load up just fine. Happy kids

      • You can get the same result by going to Settings > Network and unchecking the box which says “Connect to the Internet”. With that box unchecked, the console doesn’t even try to connect to servers when a game wants to, letting you avoid strange limitations in games which don’t actually need PSN for gameplay.

Once PSN is back up, just check that box again and the console will connect automatically.

      • Massive thanks. I can play Mad Max.

      • Have to say that I am a bit tired of singleplayer games having a bit of a head fit if the network is down, purely because they have online leaderboards (or some other completely unnecessary online interaction). I appreciate that some people are into the stat tracking thing & whatnot, but to me if that alone stops a game loading that I should be able to play by myself, it needs to die a death. Quickly.

If a game has zero interaction with other players (as in if I am not physically connecting to other people), then I personally see no reason why it cannot work if the network is down & more games should take this into account. Just because there is a network there, doesn’t mean you have to use it!
