SOMA Has Sold Just Over 250,000 Copies Since Launch

Frictional Games’ SOMA was released in September 2015 and now the studio has confirmed that the game has sold just over 250,000 copies since launch. The studio hasn’t made its investment back yet on SOMA, requiring another 20,000 to 30,000 sales to do so, but expects to reach that threshold before the end of the year. In fact the figures have been encouraging in a way to Frictional as SOMA is on the path to profitability, meaning the studio will be less anxious in creating similar sized titles going forward.

In fact Frictional now has two games in development simultaneously, a first for the company, which will allow the studio to explore different genres and have a higher release rate for games. The studio is still in the early process of working on two games, so don’t expect a new Frictional title just yet. The blog post about SOMA and its reception is an interesting read. When Tuffcub reviewed SOMA he gave it a 9/10, so it must be worth checking out if you’re a sci-fi horror fan.

  1. Shame it hasn’t seen more success, I’m enjoying it so far. Great atmosphere and f**ked up story. Usually i avoid games which involve running away but i’m finding those sections quite manageable in this game. It’s that other thing that you’re not supposed to look at which freaks the bejasus out of me!

    • Also, are the live-action videos spoiler-free or should i wait until i’ve completed the game?

  2. The fact that Firewatch sold double that in 1 month, despite being inferior in every single way, is depressing.

    • Yeah I was so looking forward to Firewatch and it ended up being meh! I also couldn’t understand the hype and love for the opening. Whereas Soma’s story floored me, especially the ending…whew!
