SOMA Was Getting DLC, But It Was Cancelled

SOMA, one of the best games from 2015 and that’s official because I did the review, almost had some DLC but it was cancelled due to a lack of resources. Whilst it would have been wonderful to have more of the story Frictional Games made the sensible decision to scarp the idea rather than release something sub-par. Gameranx spoke to Frictional Games’ Creative Director Thomas Grip who had this to say.

There was talks about making a DLC close after finishing the first game. The idea was to make something smaller while we started up the next big project. However, it didn’t feel we had good enough ideas or resources to make sure the DLC did the full game justice. SOMA heavily relies on presenting various philosophical questions and making them work in a game space. This takes a lot of work to get right and we felt we couldn’t do that for a DLC while simultaneously working on a bigger project. So we scrapped those plans.

Frictional have also been exploring a VR version of the game, which would be awesome, but once again the lack of resources means it will probably never happen. If you haven’t played the game then I highly recommended it, I still get an uneasy feeling in my stomach when I think about the choices you have to make.

  1. Not thought about this game in a while. Great experience.

Need to sort out the grammar in the article title TC

  2. That title makes no sense! :-P

However, good on them for holding back because their ideas simply didn’t pass muster.

      • It’s Friday, it’s friday, something, something, awful song is awful! it’s awful! It’s friday. But why is TSA reporting the day of the week? That is not Playstation news! Fake site is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaakeeeee! :P

  3. I bought SOMA expecting something incredible but what I got was SO MEH. Maybe I need to give it another chance.

    • Depends on how far you got. I found it meh at first too, then stopped playing it for half a year. When I gave it another chance, I couldn’t stop playing anymore.

    • I quit during the final area, presumably before the expected reveal that would show the true consequences of my actions, although naturally i was forming my own theory as i played. The bits i didn’t enjoy – at all – were the hiding from the entity bits. After failing to avoid the one near the end too many times i had enough.
Other than that though i do think it’d be a good fit for VR.

    • You missed one of the best endings of a game ever!

  4. SOMA was extremely good, one of the scariest and best games I’ve ever played. A shame there was no DLC, but given it couldn’t really be as good as the game, maybe it was a wise choice to cancel it.
