Nioh – the latest game from Team Ninja – is shaping up to be one of the hottest Japanese imports of 2016. Having been more than a decade in the making, it draws inspiration from the Souls franchise as well as the developer’s previous work.
An alpha demo is available to download and play right now via the PlayStation Store – here’s a link for EU account holders out there.
We’ve had time to quickly sample the game and so far our initial description holds true. It’s quick, precise, and brutal with plenty of RPG trappings for that extra bit of depth.
Complete one of the two stages and you’ll be entitled to a chunk of DLC dubbed “The Mark of the Conqueror” for use in the full game.
Team Ninja is keen to hear what players think of Nioh, inviting alpha users to take part in a survey.
Publisher Tecmo Koei has yet to confirm a release date for the title though it seems to be coming along nicely. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the full game surface towards the end of 2016, if not soon.

I’ve not seen or heard anything of this game at all. Got it downloading so will see what it’s about.

It’s bloody hard is what it is!
But after a numerous deaths – including drowning at the very beginning followed immediately by falling to the sword of my own ghost – i treaded cautiously and managed to make some steady progress until my luck eventually ran out.
It’s definitely grabbed me though, now i need to look into the different stances and “animal totems” (can’t remember what they’re called).
