“Everything about this computer animation appears cheap and tacky,” was The Observer’s review of the Ratchet & Clank movie, “More clunk than Clank,” adds Empire. “So profoundly bad that it represents the worst of two entirely different mediums, Ratchet & Clank doesn’t blur the line between movies and videogames so much as it flushes them both in a toilet and watches as they swirl together down the drain,” comments Indiewire.
Oh dear. It appears all the best bits from the Ratchet & Clank movie are in the the video game and the rest is a bit pants. The movie opened in 7th place in the States taking a smidgen under 4.9 million, roundly thrashed by other kid friendly movies such as The Jungle Book and Zootopia.
As for the UK box office, well let’s just say that the movie came out in the same week as Captain America, and leave it at that.
The hunt for a good and, more importantly, successful video game based movie continues. Next up is World of Warcraft at the end of the month.
UPDATE:Â “The best thing I can say is that it’s… possible… that younger audiences may stay awake”

That’s a shame. I’m going to see it next week anyway.
It may just be that it’s not to people’s tastes but is actually very good for the right audience. If critics are watching it without having played the games, they’ll be much less invested in the characters and their universe.

Looking at the local cinema times at the weekend and was surprised to see only one showing a day. Guess this explains why. Would have loved this to be good, but will probably just stick to enjoying the game until this hits a streaming service.

Seen it at the pictures on Saturday. Don’t waste your money on the most cookie-cutter, factory-produced example of a movie to have come out in years.
Nothing about it is novel or surprising.
Just get the game.

Damn, was really hoping this would be good. Lets hope Fassbender can break the mould of shityy films based on videogames.

Well I liked it. They changed the story a bit too much for my liking and I didn’t like how they forced Dr Nefarious down our throats yet again -he’s the worst thing about R&C yet they include him in nearly every single game now and somehow work him into the remake of the original game (which he wasn’t even part of). Other than that I thought it was great. Animation was very good and it had heart. I hate how every animated feature movie nowadays has to make a statement about something deep otherwise it’s deemed unoriginal or crap. So pretentious.
The showing we went to was on the smallest screen (practically a 50″ plasma in the broom closet) and me and my Nephew were the only one’s watching it. So I had a feeling it might not do too well. Such a shame.
Maybe releasing the game and the film together as a double-disc collection would have been better. There were scenes in the film that were not in the game but I felt they should have been and vice versa. The whole thing has been handled poorly imo.

That’s a big shame. I have heard the main issue it has is that it is 100% fanservice and modern culture references. But as far as video game films go, i do think it is entertaining. Probaly give it a chance when it’s out on Blu-ray. Provided i have a jurb by then.
But i do believe that CGI films by the developer and/or publisher is a smarter way to handle video game films. Admittly, Paul W.S. Anderson has ruined the genre for me due to his…..god.
awful.
Films. *eye twitches*

actually, i think the next game movie is Angry Birds.
but even i’m not going to see that, probably. (>_>)
next for me is definitely Warcraft.
