Meet Some Of The New Pokémon Coming To Pokémon Sun & Moon

I have a new favourite Pokémon. When I first saw Mimikyu, I laughed at the absurdity of the little monster, looking like it had flayed a Pikachu and then decided to wear its droopy, sagging skin as a disguise. It could easily have been the darkest, most twisted Pokémon ever created and the source of many a child’s nightmares.

Thankfully that’s not the case. In actual fact, it’s got perhaps the most heartbreaking story of them all. Mimikyu has to hide from the sun, with sunlight one of its main weaknesses, and having to do that made it so desperately lonely that it latched onto the vast popularity of Pikachu merchandise from 20 years ago just to try and make friends. It thinks that looking like Pikachu will endear itself to humans, and so it scrawled on the fading yellow cloth it hides in to mimic its form.

There’s plenty of other Pokémon in the latest trailer to arrive in the West – Mimikyu was revealed in Japan last week, as part of a steady drip feed of new info – including Wimpod, Bounsweet, Comfey, Mudsdale and Bewear.

The trailer also tells us that you’ll now be able to level up your Pokémon beyond the previous cap of level 100, making use of the new Hyper Training mode. It lets you max out a Pokémon’s stats in a much simpler way than you previously had, which was to breed Pokémon over and over until you got perfect stats.

Hyper Training will rely on you collecting bottle caps to trade in with the unimaginatively named Mr Hyper.
