UK Charts 15/08/16: No Man’s Sky Is Number One

A small indie team who’s last game was, let’s be honest, a slightly rubbish side scrolling motorbike game, have somehow managed to release a game on one format and still outsell Grand Theft Auto V, which is available on a billion formats.

Not only that, it has become the second biggest launch on PlayStation 4, beating everything except Uncharted 4, and Sony’s biggest launch ever for a new IP on PS4. Drinks are on Sean Murray then.

Other than No Man’s Sky there is little movement in the charts with Mario & Sonic: Rio 2016 Olympic Games getting a boost ‘cos Lympics, and everything else jiggling about like boobs in a Japanese PS Vita game.

  1. “a slightly rubbish side scrolling motorbike game” – I thought Joe Danger was excellent, frustrating at times but one of the few try, fail, repeat games I actually played intensely. Lovely graphics, gentle learning curve, very playable and extremely addictive.

    • Yes I know everyone loved Joe Danger. I hated it. His inane grin made me want to punch the fucker. See also: Mario

      • I know what you mean, after the 50th failed attempt of jumping a shark infested pool, I was starting to find enjoyment in seeing them devour his puny, spandex clad, little body.

    • I have to agree with Tony, Joe was brill and it had me hooked for ages too.

    • J J J JOE DANGER :)

      • I think you’ll find it was “J J J Joe D D D Danger”… actually! :P ;)

      • ARGH! KILL KILL KILL!!!!

  2. Congrats Hello Games! Enjoy the number one while it lasts, I’m sure GTA will be back on top in a few weeks.

    • GTA was a bit of a freak thing last week, wasn’t it? Possibly due to being available cheaply. It was down to £30 on Amazon. It’s not any more. So it’ll be on it’s way down again, until someone suddenly finds a whole bunch of extra copies to sell cheaply again. Give it a month or two.

It’ll be interesting to see what NMS does next week though. Will it suddenly plummet down the charts? Will the price drop quickly and give it a further boost? Will all those people who were undecided suddenly make up their mind and buy it? Or not buy it?

It’s a well deserved result for the game though. I imagine they’ll be happy with (a) selling lots of copies, and (b) a Metacritic score of 70 for a game they even admitted themselves wasn’t for everyone. It’s like some sort of obscure JRPG scoring 70 and selling more than 3 copies.

      • I love how GTA at £30 is cheap! I’d have thought it’s standard price should be about there now and £20 would be a good sale price.
What can you do, everyone loves playing it online apparently.
I wish they’d use some of those profits and make some story dlc but I suppose I should give up hope on that happening and look forward to a new Red Dead instead!

      • Yep, new Red Dead please!!

      • If it was cheaper than that, I’d get a PS4 copy. Played it on the PS3 years ago, enjoyed it, moved on.

I’d buy it again at a decent price. And if some story DLC was released. As it is, it’s not worth it. They just keep adding stuff to the inexplicably popular online bit.

It might have actually been cheaper in one of the PSN sales if they’d put the game on it’s own on sale. But no, have a bargain price for the game and a bunch of money for the online stuff.

Of course, if they want to do a new Red Dead whatever, I’ll forgive them. I’d even be happy with a PS4 remaster of Red Dead Redemption, being the best game of the entire PS3 generation.

  3. Nice to see it selling well, though I can see it plummeting down the charts in the coming weeks. As much as I absolutely love the game, its not for everyone and I can see a lot of pre-owned copies lining the shelves in GAME/CEX.

  4. Not unexpected given the interest in the game, hopefully many of them find the same engagement that i’m having with it – well, maybe not quite the same – i think i played it for 11 hours yesterday .. o.O

  5. It took number 1 from a game that’s been out for several years. A quiet week if there ever was one.

    • It still outsold the other titles and most of those haven’t been out for too long. ;-)
