Two New Off-Screen Final Fantasy VII Remake Screens Have Been Posted

Square Enix were at the 2017 Monaco Anime Game International Conference and presented a couple of screenshots from the much anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake. The first screen is rather unremarkable and shows Cloud hiding behind a crate, but the second screen is rather more exciting as it shows a boss battle and it has been revealed that the scenery will be partly destructible.

Director Tetsuya Nomura seem to confirm that action will not be turn based, saying “I’ve put a lot of attention into the combat system, and it’s going to happen without interruption.”

I should point out that quote was orginally in Japanese, then translated to French, then in to English so I hope it’s correct.

  1. Looks snazzy. I am disappointed about it not being turn based and it really annoys me that it is now deemed an obselete format. How they will tie in the summons into it, I do not know but there really should be an option for turn based. Yes, i’m old fashioned but I like to take my time with some battles. This? It sounds like I’ll be on my feet all the time, which isn’t a bad thing but FF7 was the first Final Fantasy game I played(other then a FF1 port on my old phone, it sucked as playing games on phones was bad then.) and if they did it as turn based, it could help revive it.

I do hope that it is no more then 3 discs. Part 1 beig mainly Midgar as i’ve heard they intend to flesh it out. Part 2 being everything up until a certain sad scene or what occurs for the next hour or so after said scene. Part 3 being the rest.

They better not ram Microtranscations in it.

    • If you want to play the game just like the original, you still have the original you can play :)

Like it or not, this remake does not prioritize the hardcore fans – those are too hard to satisfy. It’s made first and foremost to bring new people in to the series with something they know worked the first time, and to do that – they need to make it more modern.

I’m for one alright with whatever changes they want to bring in, because this is not FF VII – it’s a remake – which for all intents and purposes should be different, but close enough.

      • Or maybe they could satisfy both to some degree. Which was the very clearly stated aim of FFXV. (It’s right there at the start of the game!)

And it was mostly successful. Some people (the new people) didn’t like chapter 13, for instance. Old fans probably should have understood what it was trying to do there (reminds me of part of FFIX actually). Newcomers might have liked the battle system more than old fans, until the old fans realised that “wait mode” is a good thing.

Would a remake of FFVII work in if the battle system was more like XV? Not turn based, but with the option of time stopping when you stand still? I’d certainly be happy with that.

It also needs a battle against 100 cactuars. Like XV just gained with todays update – worth tracking down that battle if you want lots of XP and 333AP by the way. (Actually, the 333AP seems to be a one time deal)

      • I know but the remake has been confirmed to have more content, expands on parts of the original and I was really hoping it would be turn based. It would be one heck of a nice callback to when JRPGs were the best and turn based combat is very rae nowadays. It’ll be fun though and if it is based on FFXV’s system and heavily modified(it seems to be), it’ll be a decent remake. Though it will never live up to expectations due to the sheer volume f the expectations. I disliked/hated 13 because of it’s linearity and the plot being meh. That and the entire leader based combat wound me up.

I do hope that they won’t be forced to take out content. E.g. The crossdressing minigame, the forced bath as that suits the game. That and I hope flanderisation does not replace the characters that were in the original. Stupid sexy flanders.

  2. Turn based RPGs are by far better.

Not every game needs to be dumbed down for those with zero patience.

  3. I’m disappointed it won’t be turn-based too. I much prefer the traditional turn-based RPGs where there’s more emphasis on tactics and strategy… I can’t say as I’ve enjoyed a Final Fantasy game since they abandoned turn-based combat and its highly unlikely I’ll bother picking this up – I might pick up the original on PS4 just to make a stand haha. What colmshan1990 said, exactly!

On a side note, is World of Final Fantasy any good? I’m craving a decent Jap RPG… even considering playing Ni No Kuni again!

    • Hang on! You like Final Fantasy games, you prefer turn-based RPGs, and obviously like Ni No Kuni.

Why are you even asking about WoFF? Just go and buy it!

Although you should have bought it ages ago and got the “day one” edition, any time in the month or 2 after “day one”. Then you’d have the special Sephiroth summon. That One-Winged Angel music starts, cute little Sephiroth appears, and everyone dies or you start to wonder how they survived.

Definitely a game worth playing, even if you’re not a fan of all the other FF games. And wobbly stacks of all your favourite FF monsters are cute, and sometimes deadly.

    • Yes it is fabulous. I love it. Cute but with depth to the battles if you want to explore

  4. I’d prefer it to be turn based or even an option for us hardcore fans. However,FFxv worked and was quite impressed on how it panned out.
World of final fantasy was great and I had a ball playing it. The champions were great and hopefully they make a sequel with Lann and his sister I can’t remember the name of.

  5. I’m more than happy for square to make spin off final fantasy games which experiment and extend into new genres. But main/numbered releases should evolve the series.

They’ve been experimenting with “what makes a final fantasy” for too long. There are so many ways in which the active time battle system could be evolved into a truly deep, engaging, addictive and MODERN gameplay formula.

Instead, they have repeatedly dumbed down the franchise in a crass effort to broaden appeal, which has alienated as many old fans as they have brought in new.
