Outlast 2 May Not Be Released In Austrailia As Ratings Board Refuses Classification

Game players in Australia seem to be in a part of the world where it is much tougher to get hands on some games intended for mature audiences. The Australian Classifications Board has essentially banned Red Barrel’s upcoming Outlast 2 by refusing to give the game a classification. Outlast 2 isn’t the first game to fall foul of the board with games such as Hotline Miami 2 and The Witcher 2 also having to deal with the same outcome.

The reason for the Refused Classification ruling is because the board has decided that Outlast 2 meets the 1(a) classification rule, which can be read below.

“Depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that they should not be classified.”

Red Barrel has two option really in light of this. The studio either releases a censored version of the game in Australia, or does not sell the game in that territory.

From the heady days of the Mega Drive up until the modern day gaming has been my main hobby. I'll give almost any game a go.

  1. Maybe it’s time to introduce the 21 classification. I mean, if a game can’t pass an 18 rating then why bother. Australia seem to stop a lot of games.

    • I dunno, I think cultural standards are something that stand apart from ratings, I would say it’s old fashioned but that’s by my standard, who am I to judge theirs. Plus I think the Aussie’s are far more used to importing than we are in the U.K, I guess that’s because like you say they have a lot of banned stuff.

  2. Being a fellow aussie this dosnt suprise me. Gtav was the first non censored gta we habe ever had. The big issue being drugs ams crime in some areas atm is stupidly high. Where i live. The crime rate in the last 5 years has taken off. Its stupid. Drugs are massive every 2 or 3rd person u seen in town on a friday ans saturday night is on something. Which to be fair dosnt mean we shouldnt get games that show it. But it only takes that 1 stupid idiotic crack head steeling a car and breaking into a home to turn around and say i seen it in a game and it looked fun. Movies show it? They get released.. i can agree with some but we also need to stop mothering everyone. If your old enough to make decisions in life. U cant blame anyone else but yourself.

    • Using my phone.. my spelling and grammer went out the window haha

  3. Too scary for Australians, they could use that for marketing in the rest of the world. ;o)

But, of course, it’s quite a shame to lose the sales of a whole continent.
