Shakedown: Hawaii, the next game from VBlank, the chaps who made Retro City Rampage, will tell the story of an ageing CEO and reality TV star stranded in a world he “no longer understands”. When he discovers that online shopping is killing his businesses he takes drastic measures – most notably shooting a lot of people – to get his empire back on track.
The game will include a business acquisition meta game and you’ll be able to market new schemes to the people of Hawaii including avocado toast, VHS rentals, and a taxi service – little digs at Netflix and Uber there.
No the weird thing, even this is a 16-bit style pixel game (which is infinitely better than sodding 8-bit style), I actually recognise some of the places in the game. At thirty seconds in there is a caption showing ruthless developers saying “We will exploit tourists far better with a luxury shopping center,” followed by a shot of the hero destroying a typical old style Hawaiian market. That’s actually happened, with an old market full of trinkets and traditional items being replaced a Saks 5th Avenue.
Shakedown: Hawaii will be released on PS4 with crossbuy for PS Vita, PC, Nintendo Switch, and 3DS.
