EA kicked off their Gamescom showcase with a look at the new Starfighter Assault mode. It’s effectively transforming the standard assault mode to battles in space, with objectives to complete and multi-stage battles for 24 players.
There’s elements of class-based play as well, with Tie Bomber and Y-Wing being more powerful and good for taking out objectives, while the A-Wing is lighter and the X-Wing sits somewhere between. They’re fighting to either attack or defend an Imperial Light Cruiser early on, before heading into a second phase where the rebels have a trench run of sorts to try and take out a series of shield generators, before exposing the reactor core by destroying some power couplings on the Star Destroyer and trying to destroy it.
Darth Maul’s Scimitar, Poe Dameron’s Black One X-Wing, Slave One and the Millenium Falcon all appeared as hero ships, each with special abilities. Darth Maul can cloak, for example. There can also be other elements at play in battles, such as Rebel Corvettes that support the attacking forces.

Wonderful, it looks beautiful and sounds absolutely incredible! I really hope they keep multiplayer BF2 fun and accessible like the last game, a lot of people moaned about lack of depth but to me it felt endearingly straightforward and it really was a case of taking part being more important than winning. And hopefully the campaign will be an immersive mix of set pieces and AI arena battles with plenty of nail biting and going ‘I’ve got a bad feeling about this!’ before some sweaty air punching and wookiee yowling.
