[Update] Hurrah! The PlayStation Network Is Back Up Again

Update: Looks like PSN is back up and running again, with you fine community folk saying it was back around 7:20PM GMT.

It’s certainly atypical for PSN to be down, let alone down twice in such a short space of time. The once flakey and unreliable service having become much more stable over the last few years and there’s nary a sign of network maintenance, let alone unexpected downtimes.

Is it the number of people wanting to go on Monster Hunter: World this evening? Perhaps there’s a few eager beavers who want to get punching in Dragon Ball FighterZ? It could even be the ripple effect from Meltdown and Spectre finally being felt by Sony. Whatever the reason, PSN is down for the second time this week.

As always, keep an eye on status.playstation.com for more info, but here’s what it looks like at 6:15PM, after an hour of downtime:

  1. I thought that these issues were going to be a thing of the past now that we have to pay for the online access?

    • No service has 100% service uptime.

PlayStation Network is far more reliable than Xbox live, its just nobody ever posts news about Xbox live downtime, its userbase is substantially smaller and substantially less significant

  2. Good to see all this money we are pumping into our PS Plus subs is going towards building a robust online network.

  3. Looks like it’s back up now.

But twice in one week at roughly the same time? I’m guessing some kid got home from school, finished his homework, then decided to order a DDoS attack on it.

    • Still up 99% of the time though hey!

      • Yep, still more than 99% of the time.

That would mean it was down for a whole 87.6 hours a year. Or 7.3 hours a month. Which is probably about as long as it’s been down this month. But that’s an unusual month, and there’s obviously some issue with Sony. Could be they changed something and made it a bit flakey, or it could be a DDoS attack this week.

No reason to expect next month to be as “bad”, so yeah, still better than 99% up time.

Sorry, I shouldn’t go throwing pesky facts at you, should I?

      • Starman comment of the week!

      • Yep, pretty good. Xbox live is 97%…

  4. Maybe the network needs one of those famous updates that improve stability.
