Fortnite Battle Royale On Xbox One Will Be Getting Cross-Platform Play Too

There were a few things to take away from the Fortnite Battle Royale announcement a couple days ago: Fortnite on mobile is a ridiculously big opportunity for Epic to grow the game, cross-platform progression, play and purchase is a huge deal, and that Xbox One players were being left out of this particular party.

The last point put a lot of people’s noses out of joint, but thankfully Epic have been able to come out and say that Xbox One players will also be getting cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase. However, as the wording makes clear, that won’t include play with PlayStation 4:

We’re happy to announce today that in partnership with our friends at Microsoft, Fortnite will feature cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase, between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and (in the next few months) Android.

Quite how this will all work isn’t yet clear, but we expect Epic to update their FAQs soon. You can already do cross-play between PS4 and PC, so long as you team up through an Epic Games account and their friends list, and this puts you onto PC servers. However, the streams of PS4 and Xbox One will not be crossed, or at least, not again. It will likely work quite similarly to how it does in Rocket League, where PC players can be matched up with any platform, but this filters players onto distinct server groups.

If all of that sounds like a pain and you’re worried about going up against PC gamers with mouse & keyboard? Well firstly, don’t worry too much about that, because this ain’t hitscan, and secondly, it’s all opt in.

  1. So cross purchasing is also ruled out for PS4 owners? Ouch.
All because Sony is acting like a child.

    • No, cross-purchasing works with PS4 right now, I’m 99% sure. It’s likely going to be a case of choosing one way or the other.

      • Ah, ta. The quote made it sound like it was Xbox only.

      • Ah yeah… That’s just because it’s sort of separate. The statement from a few days ago for PS4 reads:

“In partnership with our friends at Sony, Fortnite Battle Royale will support Cross Play and Cross Progression between PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS and eventually Android. This means players across devices can squad up with friends and play together.”

So it’s basically the same statement. Just need Epic to clarify and be crystal clear.
