Shuhei Yoshida Was “Horrified” When He First Played God Of War

Some people were rather annoyed just how much Kratos and the God of War formula has changed in the latest game. If you read last weeks What We Played they you will know I am one of them, but my stance has mellowed somewhat as about half way through the story the game does things – which I won’t mention as they are spoilers – which make it a lot more like classic God of War.

Another person initially upset with Cory Barlog’s reinvention of Kratos was the president of SIE’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida.

“I mean, the framerate was terrible, everything just felt bad… He’s playing, he’s got scrunched up shoulders, head shaking a little bit,” explained Cory “I definitely get the feeling while he’s playing that he’s not having the greatest of times – which is great. I mean, it bums me out a little bit, but that’s what I brought him in here for.”

“He kinda just shook his head and walked out the door. He never told me how he felt. In fact, he only told one of my friends, who he saw at a party. He [Yoshida] said, ‘Oh, you’re working on God of War? I just gotta say, I played the game the other day. I was horrified.'”

Obviously the game went on to be a big hit and Shuhei Yoshida was much happier the second time he saw the game.

  1. Love Yoshida’s frankness :D

The thing is, if they had stuck with the original formula, people would have complained that it was ‘more of the same’. Personally I wouldn’t have minded more of the same – I’ve enjoyed all the God of War games to date – but I understand why they thought the changes were necessary.

I really enjoyed the new God of War. It could have been an absolute disaster but IMO they managed to pull it off. The fact that Kratos doesn’t seek out the Norse Gods is the part I was most relieved about – they come looking for him and Kratos is dragged into something he doesn’t necessarily wont to be a part of. I guess, when you’re a ‘God killer’, it’s only natural the other Gods won’t want you around.

Really looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

  2. The game is a change of pace [playing it at the mo] but its a nice addition to the franchise overall.

Fresh direction for the title but GoW3 is still very much available [I still have it] for those who want to hack and slash until the cows come home.

I must admit at first thought I was undecided, but playing through it I would say its definitely a bold move which is triumphant!
