UK Charts 08/09/18 – Spider-Man Is The Fastest Selling Game Of 2018 So Far

The hype for Marvel’s Spider-Man was very, very real, and the flood of Spider-Man selfies on Twitter has made the social network nigh on unusable for a few sensitive souls, so it should be no surprise that the game topped the UK charts last week. Not only that, it’s now the fastest selling game of the year so far, edging out Far Cry 5 and almost doubling the sales for God of War to be the biggest selling console exclusive.

Of course, it was far from the only major game release, with Dragon Quest XI – another PS4 exclusive – doing well enough to reach second in the charts, while Destiny 2: Forsaken’s retail release mustered a moderate 8th place. It’s difficult to know how that means Forsaken is faring, as it will almost certainly be reliant more on digital sales of the expansion and its Annual Pass.

Here’s the top 10:

LW TW Title
NE 1 Spider-Man
NE 2 Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
3 3 Grand Theft Auto V
1 4 F1 2018
4 5 Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy
2 6 Pro Evolution Soccer 2019
6 7 Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
NE 8 Destiny 2: Forsaken
7 9 PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
12 10 LEGO The Incredibles

  1. Well deserved!
I completed it 100% and only one trophy away from the Platinum, but what a game! Absolutely loved it.
Going to play it again today after work xD
Also got like 50Gb of Captures from Spider-Man…. yikes lol

    • It was only released on Friday! I would want a game to last a lot longer than that, I like to get my money’s worth.

      • It’s been available for 82 hours! How much more game do you want? ;)

      • I played around 40hrs give or take. Massive fan of Spiderman and Marvel lol
Going to play it again today xD
Definitely money well spent! I was all over that game…. didn’t realise it was 3am when I completed this morning haha.

      • “How much more game do you want?”

Games that last months like racing games and adventure ones (GTA, RDR, Assassins Creed). I like to take my time exploring and completing all the main and side tasks.

      • You can do that just take your time I completed Assassins Creed in 50hrs…. I think lol.
I was gaming for like 13hrs straight (taking 15mins break of course)

      • Del isn’t exactly a bellwether for the average gamer and how long a game will take you to 100% complete.

  2. It is spectacular and even more than I had hoped for. Without doubt, so far GotY for me.
I absolutely love it and am cruising through as slowly as I can as I don’t want it to end.

Absolutely blown away by the depth and variation and attention to detail. Visiting iconic locations and the nods to all the other characters and worlds and the cameos!!!

Insomniac, take a bow team, you delivered something huge!!!!

  3. Is Dragon Quest XI a PS4 exclusive? Isn’t it available on PC? Or do we mean “console exclusive”? Or possibly “only physical copies count making the charts pointless”?

And bloody Spider-Man! Nobody was playing anything else all weekend it seems. Ok, so it’s a nice looking game, but it’s another big open world thing presumably full of all sorts of pointless crap. And from videos I’ve seen (including the TSA stream last night), the combat looks weird. Do you really need to pop up that radial menu thing every 2 seconds? And I suspect that nice fluid swinging around the city from all the trailers isn’t quite like that in practice.

Looking more and more like one to wait for a sale on.

    • You don’t need to use the gadgets all the time but it’s fun to do so.
The combat is great and swinging is as fluid as it looks once you master it, which didn’t take too long.
It’s definitely worth full price I think, I’ve found it hard to put down since I started playing!

  4. Good to see Dragon Quest up there. I’ve put about 30 hours into it so far and loving every minute.

  5. Done very well here with the launch. No competition really at the moment, so can sell for £50 and people will still buy it. They’ve got another 6 or 7 weeks of sales until RDR2 as well. Good planning.

    • Sony definitely hit the sweet spot for Spidey’s release.
And doubling the sales of God of War is mighty impressive.
This shows people want and are willing to buy single player only games.
Still can’t believe EA cancelled Hennig’s Star Wars game, imagine what Insomniac or Santa Monica could do with the Star Wars licence.
I hope the Square Enix Marvel games are this good!

  6. Excellent game. At first, I didn’t think the plot was particularly gripping. But then I realised it was because it isn’t dark or full of despair. It’s an old-school, fun story, celebrating the character of Spider-man. I guess We’re so used to games being bleak and depressing that it just feels weird when they don’t used those plot devices. I mean, I am only a few story missions in, so Aunt May and MJ could die horribly, forcing Spider-man on a tale or revenge and then redemption. But… so far, so light.

Also, kinda bummed that they removed Freedom tower and replaced it with another building. Who knew you needed permission to use a buildings likeness… absurd! But I verall Insomniac have done a great job recreating the greatest city in the world. I could pretty much navigate the city based on memory alone. Very impressive. But I did noticed a few glaring omissions here and there. The Wall Street Bull, Trump Tower (now Fisk Tower I believe). the WTC Memorial and Freedom Tower being just a few of the more obvious ones.

Still, one of the best open world games in ages. And the most fun.
