Yooka-Laylee Is Getting A Massive Visual Downgrade, And It Won’t Cost A Thing

People tend to react very, very badly when there’s even a hint of a visual downgrade between the first trailers for a game and the final product, but I get the feeling that won’t be the case for Yooka-Laylee. In fact, I think it might elicit a few chuckles, as Playtonic take the game right back to its inspirations and forebears with an N64 filter:

The 64-Bit Tonic will be a free update to the game in the next couple of weeks – it’s currently in QA testing – which can be activated by visiting the local Vendi. It drops the game detail, caps the frame rate, limits lighting, shadows and shaders, and then slaps some CRT scanlines on the screen.

“It’s the closest you’ll get to 1998 without chugging Sunny D in a pair of Dr. Martens,” Playtonic write.

  1. How was this after the update? Worth getting – I was a huge Banjo-Kazooie fan growing up. The initial reviews and price put me off!
