The PS4 Passed 90 Million Sales Over Christmas, 1-In-10 Own Marvel’s Spider-Man

The PlayStation 4 continues to sell like hot cakes, with another strong December holiday shopping season pushing the console to 91.6 million units sold by the end of 2018. The last we heard, the PS4 had sold 86.1 million units by its fifth birthday in mid-November, but the console sold more than 5.6 million in the last month and a half of the year.

Hitting the 100 million mark and even eclipsing the 102 million consoles that the original PlayStation sold is now well within reach for 2019, as the PS4 marches up the list of best-selling games consoles.

Not only that, but strong console sales tied in with huge sales for Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has sold more than 9 million copies worldwide. Strangely Sony only quote that figure as being up until 25th November, and with continuing discounts through the rest of the year the game will have sold plenty more copies. That means that one in ten PS4 owners also have a copy of Spider-Man. That’s huge.

John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment said, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”

  1. Very impressive.
Well done to Sony and Insomnaic for Marvel’s Spiderman and Santa Monica Studios for God of War.
John Kodera ought to give them studio a raise! Might help the Devs get the right funds to make a Spider-Man or any other Marvel Hero and GoW with a new IP I want more new games!!!! Roll on 2019 (RE2 I can’t hold my excitement)

  2. It’s actually selling more than the PS2 then? Possibly. 86.1m in the first 5 years is just over 1m less than the PS2 did, but that was released in Japan first and then everywhere else while the PS4 released in Japan after the rest of the world.

So do we ignore the first few months sales for the PS2 and start from when it was available in the regions most of the sales come from? In which case, the PS4 is selling faster.

I think the PS5 might get off to a slow start, and a lot more PS4 sales are still to come. Especially if the PS5 is backwards compatible.

And why no PSVR numbers? Everyone seems to be assuming it’s probably hit 4m by now, so why aren’t the making a big deal over that too? Seems very unlikely it hasn’t hit 4m, given the big boost in sales over the past few weeks. Maybe it’s shot past 4m and they’re waiting for 5m to announce that separately?

Also, how did Spider-Man sell that many? It’s technically very good, and swinging around as Spider-Man is fun for a bit, but it gets a bit boring quite quickly. Luckily it’s not very long or challenging. Starting to wonder how much of it the people giving all those great reviews for it actually played.

And you don’t unlock the “I forgot my Spider-Suit so I’ve got to do it in my Spider-Pants” costume until you’ve completed 100% of everything, which is the biggest disappointment of all. I wanted to do the final boss fight in my Spider-Pants! But no, I’ve got Spider-Pants, a Platinum trophy, and nothing left to do.

  3. Awesome to hear, its an cracking console and Spider-Man is such a gem of a game. Even friends of mine who don’t have any interest in the comic world and all its mediums are playing Spider-Man and getting involved, plaguing me with comic related questions as a result [which I actually love ha]

The PS4 is genuinely a special bit of kit and I am really happy it’s doing so well.
