Will Kerslake, Design Director at Crystal Dynamics, tweeted something very astute a few days ago. He noted that that twenty years ago if a product did not appeal to you then you just wouldn’t buy it. Today, if the product does not appeal to you then “No one should buy it, and I want to hurt the company for not catering to my specific interests.”
Will’s theory have been proven by the reception of the news that Borderlands 3 will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store for six months. As soon as the deal was announced the existing Borderlands titles on Steam started getting thousands of negative reviews as protest.
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has said that he expected the review bombs and as Steam doesn’t have any interest in stopping such practises he is happy with 2K’s decision to move to Epic.
Ironically, that this misuse is possible and that Steam has no interest in correcting this misuse makes me kind of happy about 2k’s decision and makes me want to reconsider Gearbox Publishing’s current posture on the platform.
