The Raid’s Joe Taslim cast as Sub Zero in the new Mortal Kombat movie

Indonesian actor and martial artist Joe Taslim, best known for playing Jaka in brilliant movie The Raid, is the first cast member revealed for the rebooted Mortal Kombat movie. Joe will be playing everyone’s favourite ice-pop, Sub Zero.

The movie is being produced by James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring) and has been written by Greg Russo, who is not one of the Russo brothers from Stranger Things Avengers, he just happens to have the same name. Greg’s previous work includes… well, nothing, he is also writing the rebooted Resident Evil movie as well so let’s hope he knows his video games. The movie is set to shoot later this year in Australia, so the Outback may become Outworld. Aha!

The first Mortal Kombat movie was released in 1995 and was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who went on to direct and write the Resident Evil movies. The original film took $122m at the box office, a considerable amount way back in 1995, and is one of, if not the best, movies-of-a-video-game. That is, apart from what they did to Reptile, which was just odd.

Isn’t that glorious?

Alleged details of the new movie leaked out a while back and seem to indicate that it will have a brand new lead character called Cole Turner. Cole is “a struggling and widowed boxer who cares more about his young daughter than anything. He is incredibly determined and refuses to quit in the face of fantastical adversity.”

The leak also described Sonya as “the beautiful, brainy blonde writer who chases the prophecy of Mortal Kombat,” and Raiden as “the immortal thunder God and protector of the Earth realm, who leads and trains the Earth team in the Underworld,” but who is aged just 14.

Other characters leaked include Mileena (who will be wearing thigh-high boots and a revealing one-piece), Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Drahmin, Kabal, Nitara, Reiko, and Kano, “The large, rugged Australian ex-special forces turned merc-for-hire.”

The list does not include Scorpion which would be very odd as he is one of franchises most recognisable characters and is usually featured on the box art for the games, perhaps Joe Taslim will be playing both characters, mirroring the fact that Sub Zero and Scorpion were originally the same character model but with different coloured clothing.

  1. Well done on recognising how good The Raid is.

Not so great on your knowledge of brothers that direct things. Stranger Things was the Duffer brothers. The Russo brothers did a handful of little films for Marvel you might have heard of. Along with some TV things.

Greg Russo does at least appear to be unrelated to anyone else called Russo. Either the brothers, or the other Russo that does soundtracks for all sorts of good things. Jeff.

    • Shush.

It was because I read something about Russo and Duffer collaborating so got mixed up.

      • Now that would be something fun to see.

Also, don’t go Googling the 2 pairs of brothers to find out about them collaborating unless you’re up to date on both Stranger Things season 3 and all the Marvel films, as you’ll probably find spoilers.
