Switch Online NES & SNES February Game Update includes Smash Tennis & Shadow of the Ninja

Nintendo’s throwing a handful of new (old?) games into the Nintendo Switch Online NES and SNES Game Library, with two of each joining the roster on 19th February.

The four games are:

  • Pop’n TwinBee (SNES)
  • Smash Tennis (SNES)
  • Shadow of the Ninja (NES)
  • Eliminator Boat Duel (NES)

It’s a bit early in the year for strawberries and cream, but Smash Tennis will serve up some classic Wimbledon-esque tennis with Exhibition mode and Tournament mode across eight different court types.

Meanwhile, the sixth game in the TwinBee series, Pop’n TwinBee is a 1993 vertical scrolling shooter in which TwinBee and WinBee have to set off to help save Dr. Mardock from himself. Instead of having lives as is common in the genre, you have a life gauge that gradually drains down until you reach 0.

It’s the year 2029 and America is ruled by Emperor Garuda in Shadow of the Ninja. Two shadowy ninjas from the Iga clan have to infiltrate and battle all the way through to overthrow the emperor and save the nation.

Eliminator Boat Duel does pretty much what it says on the tin, as you hop into powerboats and race while fighting to sink your rivals. Manage to do that and you’ll earn $50k to upgrade your boat.

The update comes two months after the last set of new games in December, which added Star Fox 2 (and made that SNES Classic Mini feel a little bit pointless). This was after the addition of SNES games to the Switch Online library back in September, throwing twenty of the biggest and best games from the system in as a freebie for subscribers. It also saw the company step away from the monthly drip-feed of new games that they’d stuck with since debuting retro games with the NES library.
