Final Fantasy VII Remake will not have Red XIII as a playable character

Red XIII will not be a playable character in Final Fantasy VII remake it has been confirmed. The announcement came from Naoki Hamaguchi in an interview with VG247. However, Red XIII will be a guest AI character that will assist in battles alongside the main three-character party. The reason for not making Red XIII a playable character is due to the fact the character will come into the game quite late on, so it was not worth doing. Naoki explains further by saying:

“We felt the point at which Red XIII joins the party in the story is very late on so we thought okay if we’re gonna have him as a full character and try and get the player to enjoy his character development arc and growth as a character through that, it’s not really enough time to do that. We thought that the best way to have him involved was as a guest character. Normally throughout the game you’ll be playing as a three-man party, but you will have him as a guest character that fights alongside you during the last part of the story. He’ll be using all of his old really nostalgic moves, and you’ll see that. We felt that was the best way of showing him off as a character and who he is. That’s why we felt that was the best way to include him.”

There you have it. Seems a pretty justifiable approach. Recently, Jim had some hands-on time with Final Fantasy VII Remake and wrote:

Given how long Square Enix’s resisted the fan requests to make it, Final Fantasy VII Remake was never going to be a rush job. Although the wait has felt like eons and we’re only getting a small chunk of the complete saga, it’s astounding to see what a fine job Square has done.

You can also try out the game yourself as a demo for Final Fantasy VII Remake was released yesterday.

From the heady days of the Mega Drive up until the modern day gaming has been my main hobby. I'll give almost any game a go.

  1. Vincent, Cait Sith, Yuffie and Cid are all introduced later than Red XIII as far as I can recall, will be very disappointing if none of them are playable characters either.

    • I think it’s because the initial Remake release (Part 1 / Episode 1 etc) is only the Midgar section of the original game, so you would meet Red XIII right near the end of the remake.

      • Ah, of course, that would make sense.

    • Hopefully we will be able to play as Red XIII in Part 2/ Episode 2
