UK Charts 21/03/20 – Nearly 1/2 million boxed games sold, as Animal Crossing: New Horizons smashes records

Although they are definitely not an essential product during the pandemic, video games have proved to be immensely popular purchases in the past week with more than 475,000 physical games sold throughout the U.K. That’s over triple what was sold the previous week with Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons smashing all records for the series and selling more week one copies than all the previous games, including spin-offs, combined.

It’s the biggest single game launch ever on Nintendo Switch, and that’s before you add in digital downloads of which there will be plenty as many people were trying to stay indoors. If you were one of the thousands of people to buy the game then you might want to check out all the guides we have.

Doom: Eternal manages second places but sales are actually down by about a third compared to the previous entry in the series. As for the rest chart, almost every other title saw a huge boost in numbers, here’s more from GamesIndustry.biz.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare at No.3 enjoyed a 282% sales jump, FIFA 20 at No.4 posted a 326% increase, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe at No.5 achieved a rise of 100%… and the list goes on. In fact, only three games across the entire Top 40 dropped in sales week-on-week – Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX fell 24% in sales, Two Point Hospital slipped 8%, and Nioh 2, which was No.1 last week, fell 55% in sales. All three of those games are relatively recent releases.

Here is the GfK Top Ten for the week ending March 21st

“Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the perfect island escape, drawing you in to play day after day,” we said in our 9/10 review. “All of the charms of the series’ previous games are here, but with gorgeous new graphics, DIY crafting and the eventual ability to remodel your island, you can really create the island settlement of your dreams.”

  1. I find it quite refreshing that a childish, cartoony game with lo-fi graphics, and which looks an awful lot like a free mobile game beats Call of Duty and the like.
As long as I’m not forced to play this, I’m fine with it. :-)
