Icarus is the next survival game from DayZ creator Dean Hall

The next game from DayZ creator Dean Hall is another survival game, but rips players into a sci-fi alien world instead of a zombie-filled one. Ever wanted to hunt with bow and arrow while in an astronaut suit? The game is planned for release sometime in 2021, and will be coming as free to play game.

The game will drop you onto an alien world, trying to survive the elements on a hostile planet. You start out on the orbital station before dropping down to a prospect on the planet, landing and trying to survive and get out before your time runs out. That could be 20 minutes, it could be days.

The intent is really to capture the opening hours of survival games and make that particular loop the whole game. You have a more session-by-session approach, still able to create and make your mark on the world. Each session depends on the prospect you’re trying to reach, the resource you’re trying to reach, and this could be relatively safe to reach, or a more hostile part of the planet.

You can fail, being stranded and being left behind with your character and all your progression and equipment lost. You can run out of oxygen, you can be savaged by an animal, and other players can come and rescue you, but if you run out of time and miss your rendezvous to get back up to the station, that’s you done and dusted.

Learn about the game from PC Gamer’s interview with Dean himself:

It’s a really fascinating twist on the survival genre that I’m looking forward to trying out.
