Fallout TV series teased by Amazon Studios and the creators of Westworld

A short teaser trailer for a TV adaptation of the Fallout game series has been released, heading to Amazon Prime Video as an Amazon Original. It’s in production at Kilter Films, and we’ll get into why that’s great news down below…

Amazon Studios have licensed the rights to the video game series, bringing Kilter Films on board to handle production, with Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy acting as the show’s executive producers.

Amazon’s description of the project reads, “The world of ‘Fallout’ is one where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077. The magic of the ‘Fallout’ world is the harshness of the wasteland set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy. It is serious and harsh in tone, yet sprinkled with moments of ironic humor and B-movie-nuclear-fantasies.”

The series is now in development, but it seems to be quite early on in the project. Even so, Amazon have given it a series commitment and will be bringing it to their Amazon Prime streaming service. The company has an overall deal with Kilter Films, who are also in pre-production on The Peripheral, based on a William Gibson novel.

Bethesda’s Todd Howard (also an EP on the show) said, “Over the last decade, we looked at many ways to bring ‘Fallout’ to the screen. But it was clear from the moment I first spoke with Jonah and Lisa a few years ago, that they and the team at Kilter were the ones to do it right. We’re enormous fans of their work and couldn’t be more excited to work with them and Amazon Studios.”

It’s the latest in a string of attempts by video game companies to translate their franchises to film and TV series. Here’s hoping that this is more Fallout: New Vegas than Fallout 76, eh?

  1. If this is going to be a proper adaption the show must include:

The character falling through the ground at regular intervals
The character going to meet another character and they can hear them but not see them
The character being punched by a mutant and flying 200 metres in the air
Another characters head windmilling around and the main character doesn’t bat an eyelid
A pistol changing in to a giant red exclamation mark
Characters randomly walking off cliffs and dying for no reason
Characters limbs rubberbanding like Mr Fantastic

    etc

    • I’d be more worried about how they’re going to squeeze in some sort of AI that wants to control everything.

100% of all TV series that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy have been involved in have had exactly that. Ok, so that’s only 2 series so far, but that’s not the point. Not that Westworld wasn’t good, but that whole Rehoboam thing was just a more expensive copy of what they’d done in Person of Interest.

      • I’m pretty sure there was an AI in one of the Fallout games that was trying to control everything so I reckon they’re pretty well covered there. Not sure which Fallout it was though.

  2. Just don’t be as boring as Westworld. If such a thing is possible.

  3. I wonder how many episodes will revolve around helping settlements? Or as an episode starts, the textures don’t load until after the intro credits roll.

Ripe though for a TV series. Lots of ways they could take it.
