Resident Evil Village ray tracing mode targets 4k at 45fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X

Capcom has taken an unusual path for how they’re implementing ray tracing for Resident Evil Village. For PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game has a standard 4K at 60fps graphics mode, but when ray tracing in active it will run at 4K resolution with with an unusual 45fps frame rate target.

Capcom also detailed other platforms. Xbox Series S’ regular graphics mode runs at 1440p/45fps, with ray tracing at 1440p/30fps, PS4 Pro has a choice between 4K/30fps and 1080p/60fps, and base PS4 runs at 900p/45fps.

Resident Evil Village Output Resolution and Expected Framerate

  • PS5 – 4K/60fps
  • PS5 ray-tracing – 4K/45fps
  • Xbox Series X – 4K/60fps
  • Xbox Series X ray-tracing – 4K/45fps
  • PS4 Pro – 1080p/60fps
  • PS4 Pro high-resolution  – 4K/30fps
  • PS4 – 900p/45fps
  • Xbox Series S – 1440p/45fps
  • Xbox Series S ray-tracing – 1440p/30fps
  • Xbox One X – 1080p/60fps
  • Xbox One X (HIGH RESOLUTION) – 4K/30fps
  • Xbox One – 900p/30fps

Typically games target 30fps or 60fps to match the 60Hz refresh rate found on all modern TVs, with frame rates between those two targets leading to screen tearing and uneven frame timing. High-end TVs have ways around this with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) able to adjust the refresh rate to match the input, but this feature is currently only available on Xbox Series X|S.

It’s better to think of the 45fps target as an unlocked frame rate, a feature that is fairly regularly featured in games to remove a frame rate cap or V-sync and improve the responsiveness of the game. It’s been found in games like inFamous Second Son, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and plenty more besides.

However, it’s strange to pick this one compromise and not offer other graphics modes alongside. I’m sure that some users would rather have PS5 and Xbox Series X aim for 1440p/60fps or even 1080p/60fps with ray tracing, for Xbox Series S to run at 1080p60, and for PS4 to have a locked 30fps.

The frame rate and resolution targets were added to the Resident Evil website overnight following the second Resident Evil Showcase. During the showcase, Capcom announced details of the second Resident Evil Village gameplay demo, a time-limited expedition into two of the game’s locations, announced the new Mercenaries mode, and more.

  1. So hold off on buying it until they realise the error of their ways and add a locked 30fps mode with 4k and ray tracing then?

  2. Sony had better hurry up and enable VRR then.
