Following the departure of Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz from CD Projekt RED, a new director was needed for Cyberpunk 2077 and its future content. It has now been confirmed by GamesIndustry.biz that the person who has taken the director’s chair is Gabriel Amatangelo. Gabriel was formerly of BioWare where worked on Dragon Age: Inquisition’s DLC and expansions for Star Wars: The Old Republic. He joined CD Projekt RED in January 2020.
There will be quite a lot of work to be done to oversee the future content for Cyberpunk 2077 which has had issues since launch, especially on PS4 and Xbox One. The performance issues were deemed so poor that Sony took the action of removing Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store, and it has still not been restored. CD Projekt RED has been putting out fixes for Cyberpunk 2077 since its launch with the latest update 1.22 providing more fixes and improving the performance of the game on consoles.
CD Projekt recently reported huge profits off the back of Cyberpunk 2077’s release, despite the company’s reputation being dragged through the mud and the high-profile refund policy – in fact, this was only taken up by a small fraction of the 13.7 million people that bought the game. Still, we expect that CDPR’s extensive game update roadmap will continue as they work to retrofit the console releases to improve performance and work on the native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
It has also been confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer will not be a separate game as previously announced, and it will instead be part of the main release. Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer was first mooted back in 2019, when CDPR revealed they were working on three separate Cyberpunk games. That, however, was then going to be a separate mode added to Cyberpunk 2077 after the game’s launch, then in early 2020 it was going to be a completely standalone release built in the Cyberpunk 2077 world. Now, it seems that CDPR are redirecting it to once again be seen as a free add-on to the main Cyberpunk 2077 game.
