Horizon Forbidden West “on track to release this holiday season” but might slip to 2022

Just a few days ago we had the big gameplay reveal of Horizon Forbidden West but one thing was notably absent – a release date. Sony had previously stated on multiple occasions the game would be out this year and with Ratchet & Clank out in a week, Horizon Forbidden West seemed to be their big Christmas title.

However, PlayStation Studio’s Head Hermen Hulst has cautioned that the game might not be ready for release this year.

So we have, currently, two very big, very narrative-driven games in development: Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War. And for both of those, they’re frankly affected by access to performance capture and talent. For Horizon, we think we are on track to release this holiday season. But that isn’t quite certain yet, and we’re working as hard as we can to confirm that to you as soon as we can.

That would explain why the recent gameplay reveal did not give us a release date. Sony have traditionally dropped a big game around March each year, so shuffling the release back to that window would give Guerrilla an extra couple of months to get the Horizon Forbidden West ready, but it would mean that Sony don’t have any big games to release between now and next March, they have nothing for the lucrative Christmas market.

We’re living through unprecedented times so it’s understandable that games are being delayed, hopefully Sony will have some surprises to reveal in the next week or so over the E3 period, perhaps Naughty Dog will reveal the multiplayer Factions spin off from The Last of Us Part II.

But hey, who knows? Hulst seems to think Horizon Forbidden West will be out this year, so cross everything and pray to the machine gods that it will.

  1. It seems that just about every AAA game is slipping to 2022 so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Forbidden West do the same.

  2. Thanks Covid…
My gut is telling me that Horizon will make 2021 but it will be very close (late Nov/early Dec). Sony will want a big title going into Christmas and, unless we hear about something during e3 season, it looks like Horizon is the game to fill that void.
What I can see happening however is the PS4 version slipping into 2022. Cyberpunk is recent proof that getting games running on multiple platforms can be tricky so they may need more time to optimise the last-gen version.
Who knows, maybe it will be the other way round and the PS4 version will be 2021 and PS5 2022. The PS4 player base is larger after all.
