Reviving the classic Metal Slug franchise, Metal Slug Tactics is a wholly new take on the run and gun shooters, branching off into a completely different genre. This is now a dynamic tactical RPG with roguelike elements.
Platforms and a release window have yet to be revealed, but the game is available to Wishlist on Steam, so it’s coming to PC at least.
That’s right, instead of high-octane blasting, you’ll be taking your time to consider each and every move on the battlefield. Played from a top-down isometric view, you’ll command your heroes, building up their adrenaline bars to unlock super attacks that can dramatically shift the balance of the fight in your favour. Earn war experience through battles in order to unlock weapons and bonus perks.
However, this isn’t a straight up campaign, but one with roguelike elements. It’s not clear how deep those run, but the game’s website warns you will fail multiple times. On the other hand, you can replay missions as often as you like, using new skills to take on enemies.
Here’s the breakdown of the game’s story:
Donald Morden is back! After a long time being hidden in a country opposed to the World Government, he patiently staged a coup d’etat and is finally ready to take revenge upon the world with the army he gathered throughout the years. The Peregrine Falcons will have to do everything in their power to make it through the enemy lines and take down Morden before we get further into the war!
Publisher Dotemu has carved out a niche for themselves with classic game revivals such as this, though has typically stuck a little closer to the source material through games like Streets of Rage 4, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. This is something else entirely, and Leikir Studio will have plenty to prove in this mash-up genre.
