Doom Eternal’s current gen upgrade brings three graphics options for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with Performance targeting 120fps, Balanced shooting for 4K at 60fps, and Ray Tracing mode adding new lighting and dropping the resolution just a smidgeon to retain 60fps. The Xbox Series S does not have a ray tracing option, but can still choose between 1080p at 120fps and 1440p at 60fps.

Here’s the breakdown, with a slight advantage for the Xbox Series X at ultra-high frame rates:

Doom Eternal upgrade graphics options.

Xbox Series X
  • Performance Mode: 1800p – 120 FPS
  • Balanced Mode: 2160p – 60 FPS
  • Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p – 60 FPS
Xbox Series S
  • Performance Mode: 1080p – 120 FPS
  • Balanced Mode: 1440p – 60 FPS
  • Ray Tracing Mode: Not Available
PlayStation 5
  • Performance Mode: 1584p – 120 FPS
  • Balanced Mode: 2160p – 60 FPS
  • Ray Tracing Mode: 1800p – 60 FPS

It’s worth noting that all modes feature dynamic resolution scaling, but these are the maximum resolutions that each mode targets. Additionally, you will need a 120Hz compatible TV or monitor in order to run at that frame rate. On Xbox Series X|S, you will also have support for VRR, just in case there are any frame rate dips.

  1. There’s an extra step after you’ve downloaded the game. Or at least the first third of it that lets you start playing (so you don’t have to wait for all 68GB to download)

There are 3 extra downloads of 1.5MB each that give you access to the 2 DLCs and, for some odd reason, the main campaign.

And the ray tracing mode is the one to go for. So many reflections. A lot of which seem to be in pools of blood and stuff I don’t want to think about. More than makes up for the slight drop in resolution you probably won’t notice. Actually, it’s 44% more pixels in the full 4K “balanced” mode. But it really does look good in ray tracing mode, and appears to hit 60fps.

Ok, maybe someone’s got a TV that can handle 120fps and wants to try that. I’m you’ll both be happy with that.
