Developer Housemarque have dropped a new update for their sublime roguelike shooter, Returnal. Patch 1.4.1 is now available to download on PS5, making various fixes to the hardcore PS5 exclusive.
There’s nothing new here in terms of game features or content. This latest Returnal update deploys a number of bug fixes while also making it possible to earn certain trophies by replaying act 3 of the game’s story.
The Finnish studio reiterate their warning about enabling automatic game updates on PS5. If you have this feature enabled, then the console will enter rest most, ending your Returnal run if you had taken a pause and left the game on stand by. Here are the latest changes being made.
Returnal PS5 Update 1.4.1 Patch Notes
Platinum: “Atropian Survival”, “Welcome Home”, and “Sins of the Mother” Trophies can now be unlocked by replaying the Act 3 ending
Daily Challenge: Fixed a rare issue where players might be unable to complete a Daily Challenge in the Fractured Wastes
Daily Challenge: Fixed an occasional issue with incorrect loot spawning in the Daily Challenge
Fixed an issue which could cause save-game corruption in rare circumstances
Fixed an intermittent visual issue when scanning new items
Despite its niche appeal, Returnal has been a winner for platform holder Sony. The PS5 exclusive is already one of the best-rated games of 2021, automatically reserving a chair at those end-of-year awards discussions. We don’t know how well Returnal has performed in terms of sales though Sony recently acquired Housemarque, adding it to their growing list of PlayStation studios.
Hopefully this means we’ll see some kind of expansion or sequel in works are plenty of directions Returnal could take. Multiplayer could work particularly well if done properly.
In our Returnal review on PS5, we scored the game a masterful 9/10:
“It feels immensely satisfying to be sat here in 2021, eons after playing Super Stardust HD on PS3, and see just how far Housemarque has come. Offering a visual bullet hell spectacle, a showcase for the DualSense controller and a rewarding sci-fi narrative woven around the roguelike loop, we can say with unflinching confidence that Returnal is the PS5’s best game to date.”
