Square Enix are jumping into the battle royale arena with Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier, a last-player standing multiplayer shooter that is one of the more unexpected spin-offs from the iconic JRPG series.

Set thirty years before the events of Final Fantasy VII, players will join Shinra’s enhanced ranks of military fighters. Though there’s definitely some battle royale vibes, with rideable Chocobo and motorbikes, as well as weapon-filled vending machines, you have some classed characters to choose between – Warrior Sorceror, Monk, Ranger, Ninja – and Square Enix has added in more PvE elements with monsters to battle out in the world map – from the trailers shown, we can see a number of a familiar locales stripped from Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Square Enix held a closed beta back in June – exclusively for Android and users in the US and Canada – that will have surely fed into the game’s development.

If you wanted Final Fantasy XVI? Well, you were going to be disappointed. That game was not at TGS 2021 and Square gave fans a heads up ahead of time. Instead, this new trailer and the release date and second demo for Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin were used to pick up the slack. The real highlight, from many people’s perspectives, will be the surprise announcement of Dungeon Encounters, a minimalist dungeon crawler from the creator the legendary Active Time Battle system.
