Paradox Interactive’s epic grand strategy game Crusader Kings 3 will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 29th March 2022. Crusader Kings 3 won plenty of awards when it released at the end of 2020 for PC, rejuvenating one of Paradox’s most popular games and enhancing the dynastic strategy gameplay. That is now coming to the new generation of consoles.
The game has been thoroughly overhauled to make the jump from PC to console. The UI has been adapted to work on larger screens that you’re sat metres away from, the control scheme is aims to make jumping between the world map, actions and complex menus as easy as graceful as possible.
Skipping the last generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles means that the game will be able to run without even a hint of compromise. Not only that, but you’ll have the SSDs of the new era of consoles giving you super-fast loading, there’s Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S and support for the PS5’s Activities and Game Help systems, while the DualSense controller will translate your in-game character’s stress levels to the tension you feel in the Adaptive Triggers.
We’ve got a preview of all the improvements and changes being made for Crusader Kings 3 on console here, but looking back at our original PC Crusader Kings 3 review, we said:
“The best way to think of Crusader Kings 3 as a sequel is in terms of its own dynastic gameplay. Sure, Paradox have started from scratch with a new game, but it’s still full of scheming, warring amidst an impressive breadth of cultures and religions. Crusader Kings 3 is an heir that has been born from Crusader Kings 2 and its many expansions, including and improving on so much of what made that game great, but it can still grow and improve in its own right.”
This isn’t the only thing that’s about to happen for this game. While Lab42 has been hard at work on the translation, Paradox Development Studios has been forging ahead with the first major expansion for Crusader Kings 3 on PC, called Royal Court, coming out on 8th February. The key addition here is a visual representation of your royal court for kings and emperors, letting you display your accumulated relics and trinkets to show off how prestigious your dynasty has become. From here you’ll be able to interact with vassals and courtiers as they come to petition you for a royal judgment. There will be additional roles in your court to award to people, from food tasters through to a court tutor, who can help you learn foreign languages. You might also have more Inspired People appear, who could create great works or craft impressive weapons and jewellery for you. This will not be available for the console version, but will be added in time.
