Are you looking forward to the Harry Potter Wizarding World game Hogwarts Legacy? Well Sony and Warner Bros. would like to cordially invite you to join them for a Hogwarts Legacy State of Play stream on Thursday 17th March to get an extended look at the game.

The Hogwarts Legacy State of Play stream starts at 2PM PDT / 5PM EDT / 9PM UK / 10PM CET on Thursday 17th March. Note that the US has moved an hour closer to the UK and Europe as they’ve already got daylight savings shifting their clocks.

Set in the Late 1800s, it’s a long, long time before the books and films of the Harry Potter magical universe. It start off in Hogwarts, but as your magical abilities grow in the arts of spellcasting, potion brewing and the taming of beasts, you’ll head out and explore more parts of the wizarding world, as you go on the hunt after an ancient power in an open world. You’ll be able to visit new and familiar wizarding world locations including the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village.

Avalanche Software have been on the case developing the game, but it’s not been the smoothest sailing. One of the main problems for Warner Bros. to navigate has been that Harry Potter author JK Rowling decided to reveal to the world that she’s an awful transphobe, meaning that there’s quite a few people weighing their ability to detach a creative work from the people involved. That was made a touch more difficult when one of the producers on the game was discovered to have made strongly anti-feminist and pro-Gamergate YouTube videos prior to their hiring. They soon departed the team’s development, and it was leaked that the game would have trans-inclusive character creation options. Maybe we’ll get to see some of the character customisation on Thursday!

Beyond that, there’s just the difficulties of developing a huge, big budget game and doing so in the midst of a pandemic that completely alters how developers can work and collaborate together. Having been rumoured for years leading up to its 2020 reveal, Hogwarts Legacy was originally expected to release in 2021, but just a couple of weeks into last year, it was delayed.

That Warner and Avalanche are ready to give us an extended first look at the game in action, it’s a sign that they might still be on track to release this year. I’m sure we’ll find out later this week.
