What We Played #546 – LEGO Star Wars, Trek to Yomi & Easter holidaying

It’s suddenly Easter weekend! This may not come as much of a surprise to you as it did to me, particularly if you’ve been indulging in a spot of ‘Easter holidaying’ as well, but I’ve suddenly found that I have time to play games again after some a house move that we hopefully won’t repeat for a very long time.

I checked out Arcade Paradise which is shaping up to be the laundrette/arcade management sim you never knew you wanted, while ploughing through a few more movies in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. I’ll be popping a final score on my review next week. I’m also playing Kaiju Wars for review and I’ve bought Tina Tina’s Wonderland, so I might get time for that in the next week if I’m lucky.

Nick P finally gave Elden Ring a rest and has jumped on Lego Star Wars instead. He tells us, “It’s been quite a relaxing break from the harshness of The Lands Between. I started with Episode One and I’m working my way through. I’m impressed with some of the voice actors who have done great impersonations of the characters. Apart from Anakin. He sounds odd. I’ve also continued playing Weird West which I’m still enjoying, and I started playing Chernobylite for review. More on that later.”

Meanwhile, Nic B played a whole bunch of stuff at the end of last week as he was at WASD, and now has thoughts to share with you all. The most noteworthy are Die By the Blade, Cult of the Lamb and Trek to Yomi — previews of which can be found in those there links. There was also, Magic and Pogo, because he’s addicted isn’t he?

Cult of the Lamb Combat

Gareth has been playing Nobody Saves the World for review. He’s also restarted Divinity 2 because when he resumed his previous save he couldn’t find a fight he could finish. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? He’s also played actual, real-life Dungeons and Dragons for the first time. He said, “It was great, though only the DM had actually played before so it took us six hours to beat some goblins, follow a trail, and get partway into a cave before we stopped at midnightish.”

Tuffcub has obviously been playing Destiny 2, but also: Guardians of the Galaxy. He has thoughts: “It’s not what I expected – there’s very little shooting and an awful lot of Quantic Dreaming. By that I mean lots of dialogue, and then more dialogue while you amble around some big area occasionally pressing a button. Kinda fun, but also a bit meh. I also played: Aliens Fireteam Elite. I don’t remember anyone in the Aliens universe being telepathic but every character in the game is because I can hear them talk but their lips don’t move.”

He continued, “That must be it, and not that the game had zero budget and they cut corners everywhere. The game is quite fun and does get that “being swarmed by Aliens” thing down really well, but it’s 2022 and we’re past enemies just vanish off the screen when they are dead, it looks very dated. Someone needs to do Aliens properly, so when you kill one the acid melts the area. These ones just pop and then vanish. Meh.”

Jim made the drastic decision to delete For Honor, for now. He says, “I had loads of fun but was becoming a tad too obsessed. It was also parrying all of my attempts to tackle this steaming backlog. So, this week, my attention has been split between two titles: Ghostwire Tokyo and the Ace Attorney Trilogy. Both very different games and both very Japanese. Ghostwire has me exploring its titular city, often completing spooky side missions. While I love its setting and style, the core combat is weak, despite clever attempts to mask its first-person shooter roots.”

Ghostwire Tokyo Combat

Slightly different, Ade has been at Centre Parks, so he’s been playing Laser Combat, jeep racing and bowling. That sounds amazing, I think you’ll agree.

Miguel has played way too much Elden Ring! Way too much Apex Legends! And a bit of Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness, which he says is “a weird and wild Japanese tower-defense action RPG that finally got localised after years of teasing.”

Steve has also been Easter holidaying enjoying the delights of Edinburgh – both cultural and culinary – so not a lot of gaming has been done. He did finally get started on the fan translation of I Am Setsuna for Vita that has been sat waiting to be played, and he found a copy of the Stardew Valley board game saying, “the kids and I are excited to get stuck into that once we’re home and fully unpacked.”

Nintendo Switch Sports Volleyball

Finally, Tef also had a bunch of WASD previews to share, including Golf Gang and We Were Here Forever. He also got to share his thoughts on Nintendo Switch Sports! Aside from that, he’s been getting in a money-making race at Le Mans each day in Gran Turismo 7, and redeemed a few free months of Apple Arcade, so has been messing around with Mini Motorways, What The Golf, Chu Chu Rocket and more as he quickly explores the gaming catalogue.

But that’s enough about us; what have you played?

  1. I can fully empathise, I found moving house extremely stressful when I did that the last time.

This week, I finally finished the storyline of Bloodborne, after playing this game on and off for the last 4 years since March 2018. Wow, what an incredible game, and, even after all that time, difficult as hell, but that’s the whole point here. And it’s amazing you still find help when ringing that bell, and people come and assist you with a boss you get fed up with.

I also played some Rocket League with my son, but I suck so badly at all sports games, it’s ridiculous. It was good fun nonetheless.

And I made another attempt to get into Prey, but immediately realised why I gave up on it when I first tried. The writing of this game is so rubbish early on, you face invincible enemies with not the slightest indication how to deal with them, I have zero motivation to keep going, except for my disbelief it cannot really be such a bad game.

    • Moving really really sucks doesn’t it? ? Never again! I need to finish Bloodborne too – thanks for the reminder!

      • I managed not to move house for over 10 years now, and hope not to have to do it again anytime soon… Hope you settle in well.

  2. More Elden Ring, where i discovered Siofra River Well – which is another large map underneath the main one! Also my progress is impeded a little as i accidently aggro’d one of the sidequest npcs and now i have a heck of a journey to grab an item from an area i’m not ready for and then i have to take that item somewhere else in order to fix the quest. And this particular npc is important for my choice of sorcery, so i have to do this before making other progress. But it’s all good clean fun! :D

  3. I’ve not had much gaming time this week, due to work and Easter, but I managed to get a bit of time to play EA Active Sports 2 on PS3 and Everybody’s Golf on PS4 (I need to get the fishing and condors done before the servers shut in September!).
Tomorrow, hopefully a couple of hours co op in Mercenaries 2 on PS3, with an online friend – but they live in Italy, where Easter is a very big deal indeed!
I remember moving home 6 years ago *shudders* – you have our sympathies!

  4. Mostly just 3 things this week.

Lots of GT7, getting annoyed at the stupid times needed for the circuit experience.

Quite a bit of Hood from PS+, which can be quite fun if you’re on a team that knows what they’re doing. A trophy for interrupting the extraction at 90% was very satisfying.

And then I decided Elden Ring might be fun. Which it is, until you get to a deadly castle and die lots and then find a boss and die even more. Repeatedly. Bit of leveling, more dying and I killed it. Which was nice. Then it seems to get a lot easier than I was expecting. Until it gets hard again. Overall, I’m loving it and it’s not too frustrating.
