What We Played #579 – The Callisto Protocol, Midnight Suns & Gungrave G.O.R.E.

Midnight Suns Header

Thank goodness it’s almost the weekend, after the week that I’ve had. I won’t go into too many details, but lacking electricity for a while made playing console games rather tricky. When I was then able to power on my devices again, I got in a little bit of Halo Infinite for some short bursts of multiplayer, and lined up a download of Need for Speed Unbound, which I’ll be tucking into this weekend – Dom’s made a start on this for our review.

Callisto Protocol Tentacles

As we come to the tail end of the 2022 silly season, Jim’s been playing The Callisto Protocol for us. He’s not quite able to pin a score on it yet but, counter to some reviews out there, he’s rather keen on it, and reckons that other Dead Space fans at large will be too.

Today’s also the launch for Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and Nick P had a fantastic time with their superhero title that’s one part XCOM, one part Persona and one part its own thing. After wrapping up that review for us, he went back to God of War: Ragnarok – “I’m really not as blown away as I was expecting to be but maybe the finish might hype it up for me. Fingers crossed.”

Marvel's Midnight Suns Heroes

Gamoc wrapped up a review of Gungrave G.O.R.E. for us, some Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer and dipped into the DMZ mode for Warzone 2, but didn’t have much success in the more open battlefields. “I briefly tried Earth Defence Force 4: Iron Rain, but despite a small increase in competence and budget, it somehow has less charm than the previous one I played. I’ve also started playing Chorus, which I really like so far.”

Steve also played and completed Gungrave G.O.R.E. “in a masochistic vein as it is one of the worst games I’ve played in years.” He washed the bad design decisions out with some obligatory bedtime Xenoblade Chronicles, Asterigos: Curse of the Stars – “the new indie game IP I was most excited about this year” – and has been sat by the door waiting for the mail strikes to end so his copy of Evil West could drop through the letterbox (though is obviously very supportive of their right to strike).

Turning to Mr. Pokémon, Nic B, he’s now finished off the Pokémon Scarlet Pokédex and is just clearing up the endgame bits and bobs. All that Pokémon-ing has meant that his other Poké-passion – Pokémon Go – and the addictive card battling of Marvel Snap have taken a bit of a back seat through the week.

Aran’s getting into Cyberpunk 2077 a little bit more now that he’s deeper into the game and getting more side missions to tackle. Meanwhile, he absolutely loved his time with Citizen Sleeper and is going to be banging on about it all through our impending GOTY deliberations.

And finally we come to the ever-eclectic Miguel. He’s mixed the Japanese Lost Planet spinoff EX Troopers with some Hatsune Miku Porject Diva Mega Mix +…. and some Warzone 2.

Now then, what have you been playing?

  1. This week I had an early Christmas, as I finally moved on from my old Sanyo projector of 2008, which worked perfectly fine until now, but recently the image got dimmer, even though the bulb is not too old. As newer projectors don’t seem to have the lense shift I need, I went for one of these ultrashort throw things with a low lag.
Wow! The image is so bright I had to dim it down, and we all started to see a lot of details in PS5 games like AstroBot, which were never perceivable before..!
But my screen time was mostly used for Stranger Things seasons 2 to 4, which are excellent.

  2. I got the platinum for Lego Ninjago Shadow of Ronin and started working on Lego Marvel Avengers, also on the Vita. I’ve completed the main story, free play and helecarrier side content so it’s just mopping up the Manhattan side content to go. So far, so good!
I also played some Doom multiplayer and that’s going well too. More of the same for this weekend and the coming week!
