If there’s two things you need to know about Forspoken magic, it’s that it means can race around the world of Athia at speed with magical parkour, and that there are so, so many magical abilities for Frey to use in combat!
While Frey start her adventure with just a few core abilities on one branch of magic, she can unlock new magical abilities using mana and do this across multiple skill trees. From earth-based magics, she’ll eventually have four magic skill trees to tap into as she progresses through the story. As with the skill trees themselves, certain powers in the game are locked until completing certain story missions.
Forspoken – Earth Magic
Earth is the first magic type that Frey gets access too. Harnessing the power of rocks and plants the earth skill tree contains many abilities that prove to be helpful, both as main attacks and as support magics. The abilities in this tree are
- Bind – This summons weeds from the ground that will hold many, but not all, enemies in place for a limited amount of time. Handy for when you need to regroup yourself.
- Flow – This power is the one that allows Frey to travel great distances quickly, and is the main way to traverse Athia.
- Leap – This allows Frey to kick off a wall to jump higher
- Shimmy – Frey can accelerate when kicking off from the ground after landing
- Tendril – An ivy vine whip is swung by Frey in a 360 motion which helps to knock back enemies and provides some healing.
- Disperse – This has a flower grow in a spot and acts as a turret, throwing rocks at enemies.
- Prime – Perfect for large groups of enemies, Prime is a mine trap that explodes when stepped on dealing damage to all enemies within its blast area.

- Genesis – Another good one for enemy groups. This summons branches that flow out in front of Frey, striking enemies away.
- Leach – This power cures Frey of poison
- Screen – This power surrounds Frey with stones that act as protective barrier against attacks

- Skip – Allows Frey to warp to avoid damage.
Forspoken – Fire Magic
Another of the magic skill trees that Frey will get access to is fire magic, and it is a good option for those who wish to get in close to attack enemies, though it also offers some range options when space is needed in a fight. The spells that can be unlocked in the fire skill tree are:
- Slice – Allows Frey to summon a magical fire sword to attack enemies with
- Arc Slice – This allows Frey to use a sweeping attack using the fire sword, which damages all enemies within its reach.
- Rage Slice – Frey’s fists become fiery fist of fury, with her punching enemies until an explosive force is released which pushes them back.
- Blast Slice – Summons a magical fiery spear that Frey can throw at enemies, which causes area damage too.

- Crucible – Summons a fiery wall that encircles Frey and enemies trapped within it, increasing Frey’s attack power.
- Beacon – A support spell that increases the speed of stamina recharges, but also makes Frey easier to see by enemies.
- Conflagration – Brings up column of fire that hits enemies with magma. The magma remains on the ground for a bit of time, causing additional damage.
- Bombadier – This lets Frey kick enemies away from her which in turn triggers an explosion damaging enemies within the blast area.
- Firetrap – This summons lava under enemies and it remains in place for a little while to deal damage.

Forspoken – Water Magic
Water has attacks that are predominantly range based, so it is best to keep your distance when using powers from this skill tree. The magical abilities that water magic grants Frey are as follows.
- Bolt – Fires balls of water at enemies that remain until Frey releases a charged shot, which leads to increased damage being inflicted on enemies.
- Fan Bolt – This fires linked water arrows in front of Frey damaging all enemies that are in the line of fire. Good for hitting enemies that are grouped together.
- Chain Bolt – Fires two arrows at enemies. If both hit in the same place then bonus damage is done.
- Cluster Bolt – Frey fires an arrow in to the air which then breaks apart into multiple arrows that rain down onto a large area, dealing damage to all enemies within it.
- Glide – This allows Frey to surf across water
- Naedre – Sends a poisonous water snake towards enemies, poisoning any enemy it hits.
- Maelstrom – Summons a column of water that acts as a defence against ranged attacks, and also deals damage to any enemy that gets close to it.
- Brume – This brings about a spray of water that surrounds the enemy, making it harder for them to see you.
- Eagre – This summons a water barrier that pushes nearby enemies away from Frey
- Ablution – This causes rain to fall on Frey which will cure her of effects that slow stamina recovery.
- Inundation – Increases Frey’s critical hit rate
- Cataract – Summons a water vortex that can suck in enemies and deal damage.
- Oubilette – Summons a ball of water that traps enemies within it. Destroying the ball inflicts damage over an area due to a watery explosion.
- Up and Away – Frey launches into the air and fires out water based attacks, replenishing projectiles as it occurs.
- Float – Allows Frey to slow her falls to avoid taking fall damage.
- Alb – This reduces the damage taken by a single incoming unblockable or piercing attack.
Forspoken – Lightning Magic
The final of the four magic skill trees that Frey gains access to through the course of Forspoken’s story, this allows her to harness the power of lightning. Again, many of the attacks are ranged base but some of the spells can also be used to confuse enemies too. The full list of lightning based spells includes:
- Dart – A dart made of light marks enemies that will then be marked as targets for charged attacks.
- Storm Dart – Causes electricity to be emitted over a small area and when fully charged sends out a shockwave, hitting darts embedded in enemies.
- Seeker Dart – A lightning based homing missile that will seek out darts embedded in enemies and hit them
- Pulse Dart – This sends beams of lightning towards enemies that have darts stuck to them already.
- Scale – Allows Frey to use phantom footholds to reach higher areas.
- Spoof – Evades enemies leaving behind a copy of Frey in the previously occupied spot
- Distortion – Attacks enemies and causes them to be confused, leading them to attack each other
- Aggression – Sends out a wave of darts that are spread out allowing multiple enemies to become targets of charged attacks quickly.
- Projection – A lightning spear that emits electricity over the area it passes.
- Compulsion – Summons floating mines that explode when enemies come into contact with them.
- Sublimination – Allows Frey to absorb life force from the surrounding area to heal her.
- Compensation – Causes Surge Magic to charge faster when evading enemies using Flow.
- Tempest – Summons lightning from the ground causing damage to enemies in a large area.
- Displacement – Creates a Frey copy in a specific spot that enemies will attack instead of attacking Frey.
- Hide and Seek – Causes Frey to fire light at foes while moving quickly.
As you can see, there’s an awful lot of Forspoken magic abilities that Frey can tap into, and the game does a great job of making them look fun and splashy, with plenty of particle effects on screen.
